I get 12.5 with mix and freeway driving

Added weight will automatically cause you to lose some MPG, especially with the roof rack. Depending if you went bigger tires that plays a roll as well. You could be running your tire pressure too low. Could be on the throttle a lot.

Bunch of things to consider, but I doubt something is wrong. Also if you get winter blend that'll affect MPG as well.

I’ve never gotten decent milage (17 is really good for me) but there are a ton of factors. Tire size, load, head wind, etc. I’ve actually taken to driving my F250 diesel if I want to get “good” mileage on long trips... but mileage isn’t why I bought the 4Runner.

I must have an anomaly. I bought mine new in 2012, drive 60+ miles per day in a 50/50 mix of heavy stop and go traffic and 75mph+. I've consistently been in the 18.8 range for 191,000 miles. The only time it dipped was when I had some sludge build up on the OCV screens and a clogged PCV (this all happened when dealer was doing oil changes). Also, I was running my KO2's at sticker pressure instead of the higher proper pressure. I started doing my own oil changes, aired up to ~40psi, replaced the PCV and cleaned the OCV screens and it went back to 18.8. Lowest i ever had was 17.

This is totally normal. The engine in the 4R is dead nuts reliable but is NOT anywhere near efficient and it changes a lot based on the way you drive.

Try this: set your middle user screen to the setting that actively shows your fuel economy based on the accelerator- if you turned off your green ECO light in the settings, turn that back on too, it will help give you another way to gauge. It isn't any fun to drive like this- you'll have to wait for bigger windows to merge / turn, be way easier on acceleration to reach top speed, and be more cognizant of "coasting" into a stop than accelerating until you have to brake... but you'll see that the easier you go on the skinny pedal can make a huge difference on your MPG.

I've played around with it and I can get reliably over 20mpg in the summer months, maybe 18.5 or so in the winter if I'm babying it- and this is with a lift and extra weight. My brother has a 5th Gen also and he doesn't care ("I drive it like it was meant to be driven" lol) and gets 15-16mpg.

My ‘19 T4R Off Road was getting about 20-21 mpg highway and 18-19 mpg city with the factory tires. When I switched to Falken Wildpeak AT tires, added a 2.5” Dobinsons lift, heavy steel rock sliders and an aluminum bumper with winch, the mileage dropped about 2-2.5 mpg. I now average around 18-19 mpg highway And 17 mpg mixed highway and city driving. I can still get up to about 20 mpg on the highway if I keep it at 70 mph.

Our Florida to Arizona road trip (through ten states) in December absolutely confirmed that this relatively decent mileage only applies to flat Florida roads and perpetual summer. The best highway mileage in 5,605 miles was one of the days at 18.6 mpg. Several of the days in areas with mountainous or hilly terrain saw mpg plummet to 16 highway and 12 city. Our worst day was driving through mountain passes into a 30+ mph headwind. We were averaging 13-14 mpg highway!!!

These trucks are gas hogs in hilly terrain and windy conditions. My ‘09 5.7 Tundra averaged about the same or slightly better on road trips.

Agreed on driving style... My norm is 13 - 15 mpg... I'm doing well at 16 - 16.5...

Just got back from a 2k mile trip... never averaged better than 16.5.

I'm just curious if all these numbers are what the computer is reporting on the screen/dash? I'm not saying the computer is wrong but has anyone reset a trip counter following a fill up and then divide the miles out by the total gallons pumped into the tank during the next fill up? I would think this provides the most accurate results and may be a better judge of engine efficiently if consistently tracked. I have an 05 Tacoma that requires me to do the manual calculation and after 125K my mileage is still the same range of 16 -18 mpg with mix driving. I don't calculate every tank but typically run the numbers once a month. For me, the spark plugs being changed every 30K miles resulted in me staying near the upper end of my range.

Every time I fill up the tank, I reset the AVG MPG and trip mileage. I have found that mine is pretty accurate on the calculation, usually withing +/- .2 MPG.

Driving speed and driving style have a lot to do with MPG. I have more of a lead foot than my wife, so if she is doing the driving, she usually is getting 5%+ better mileage than me.

We have a place in the mountains about 70 miles away. The elevation profile is in the picture below - We go up 7900 feet and down 4000 feet in elevation during the trip, for a net increase of 3900 feet. The road is a state highway, mostly 2-lanes, and the speed limit is 55 in most places. On our trips up, I usually average slightly below or right at 18MPG. By the time we do some local driving, then head back to Denver, the overall trip MPG rises to 20MPG. I am usually pushing the speed limit by 5 - 9 MPH. I am pretty sure a lift and more aggressive AT tires would drive those numbers down by 5-10%!

i get 15-16 bone stock, but thats due to a lead foot around town and excessive speed on the highway.

I’m in a stock 2016 SR5 with 34k on the odo and the highest I’ve seen is 16.8. In SoOregon, it’s 35-54 degrees so that might play into it

In the last 4 years I've had (long story): SR5 premium, 2018 Limited, 2019 TRD Pro, and now a 2020 Limited and never got above 18 or below 15.

15-17 is a reliably good number for typical fuel economy for these rigs.

I briefly had a Highlander that got 25 mpg in same driving conditions.

You can expect a 2-4 mpg drop in real world conditions.

I live in W. Texas as well. The issues are lots and lots of headwinds all year around and de-facto 80 mph speed limits literally everywhere. Throw in tire pressures set for optimal wear and ride comfort, and you are gonna move the needle.

Only way I got window sticker MPG was to drive with the wind and go 70 mph or lower.

Lifted, 285/70-17 Duratracs.... 15-17 is the norm for me, no matter if on the highway at 75 or the city in relatively stop-n-go traffic.
