TIL my 3rd brake light flashes and other fun facts

My wife was following me home tonight and asked me "what are you doing to make your brake light flash that way" which of course immediately had me imagining bad ground wires, dying relays or loose bulbs. Turns out the 3rd brake light flashes 4 times before coming on solid in my 2019, I had no idea. That got me thinking about other little quirks and tidbits that I've been discovering on my rig since I bought it in August and thought it would be fun to share a new 4runner owners "huh, that's interesting" list.

1. That brake light flashes. nifty!
2. You don't have to hit the brakes to start the car, take it out of gear or really for any reason beside stopping the vehicle.
3. The ebrake is it's own set of drum brakes. Maybe this is more common than I know, but it's new to me.
4. The car isn't a hermetically sealed rolling computer, you can actually do things like (gasp) replace the radio and still be able to control your air conditioner!
5. The fender liners can make sounds that lead you to believe that you either have marbles in your head liner or you are receiving alien transmissions on your dashboard speakers.
6. If you don't have the gas cap perfectly sealed, the computer will disable traction control, MPG economy display, light up damn near every light on the dashboard and in general do everything to make you believe that you just killed your new car.
7. Somehow, the entire body and interior seem to be held together with only pop clips and nothing rattles or falls off. Seriously, how in the hell did they do that?
8. In general, there is a single wire you can tie to ground to override almost anything. Want to run your inverter at 400w all the time ? ground a wire. Want your locker available all the time? ground a wire.
9. I thought I would miss all the driver assist features that our forester has, but the only one I really miss is auto headlights. I'm so used to it that I've become the jerk you flash to let him know he's driving in the dark.

Overall pleased as punch with this little rig, GG toyota!

The 3rd brake light flasher is an aftermarket device that your dealer must've installed. It's not a standard feature from the factory. My '19 TRD ORP does not do that.

There should be a brake shift interlock that prevents you from shifting out of park without pressing the brake pedal. It is a safety feature. I just checked mine to verify and yep, I can't shift out of park without pushing on the brake pedal.

The 3rd brake light flasher is one of those things like pin stripes, window tint, and protection packages that some dealers will put on every vehicle they receive into inventory before it is sold.

To the OP: your truck didn't leave the factory that way.

OP- where did you buy your 2019?
Where I am the Southeast Toyota Distributor sticks all sorts of crap on and charges big time for it.
For example mine came with 2 Iphone charging cords, USB C cord and a cig lighter USB charger for $73. I don't have an Iphone.
All in all they stuck $3500 worth of mostly crap on it, I would have declined if I could.

Do none of the 5th gens have auto headlights, or just some trim levels? Could've sworn my '03 had them, know my 07 GX does. Even my 00 Camry did actually, weird they'd drop that.

Oh, and just for informational purposes, the flashing third brake light is a violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 108 and the dealer can be fined under 49 U.S. Code § 30165 for installing that.

The definition under the regulation is as follows. Bolding is mine:

High-mounted stop lamp means a lamp mounted high and possibly forward of the tail, stop, and rear turn signal lamps intended to give a steady stop warning through intervening vehicles to operators of following vehicles.

And you can stick your head in the ground and then act like an ass when you get pulled over for something.

I welcome interaction with law enforcement! I a lot of my friends are LEO's. I am fully aware of any real or conceived illegality of things I do. Doesnt mean I act like an ass. If I get cited for something I have done.. I take the consequences of my action. We dont need someone spouting off on every modification like you are some saint saving us from ourselves. Get over yourself... you dont matter that much and no one cares. Same as I dont matter much and no one cares about me. This is an auto forum on the internet....

Thank you for reading my post in the way it was intended.

The OP believed that his new car had a hidden feature. Now he knows that the feature no only isn't stock, but may also cause him to get a ticket or fail inspection (if his state requires inspections).

What he (and anyone else) does with that information is up to him (them).
