TRD PRO Basket Mods

These straps look promising. I can store multiple items under this.

The rack comes off fairly easily but, from new, the mounting bolts are very tight with lots of loctite. Just be careful to break one bolt loose then move on to the other before spinning it all of the way out.

For the front foot, I machined a plastic plug that fits tightly into the hole and is held in place from underneath.

For the rear tube, I used a piece of 1 3/4” aluminum tube cut to the same length as the plastic piece it is replacing. I then machined two inserts that were the same diameter as the inside of the stock tubing. Fit them into the tube leaving about an 1 1/2” protruding. I then fit it to the stock rails, drilled through the existing holes. Tapped the inserts and threaded in a new fastener.

For the holes that remained in the top of the rails, I found some grommet plugs and pressed them in.

Hope this answers most of your questions.

Good luck,
Tom

Nice job Tom! You should put some kits together and start selling them.

Agree... The new TRD pro racks are a step backwards! Check out GOBI, pricey but worth it IMO.

I just made sure to seal every layer as best as I could during installation and periodically check them by lifting back the headliner with a pry tool and inspecting for moisture. There's so many wires in those locations as well as curtain airbag components so one can never be to safe I suppose. I haven't had a single issue with leakage, thankfully, even after some broad seasonal and locational changes.
Here is the thread with the rust damage. It's what took me from not worried to paranoid.

(I live in Seattle so the truck is in the rain ~4 months straight every winter.)

I know this is an older thread but is anyone running with the BAJA TRD pro OEM drop in basket? Opinions on that basket?

Agreed. I’ve looked at so many options and the Gobi rack seems to be the best looking and the most versatile. Will probably be awhile before I’m able to pull the trigger but that is on my list for sure.

I do not know about Yakima baskets, but their might mount brackets fit. I have been using them to secure my traction boards and am experimenting on mounting a plano case up there for camping gear. The ones I am using are the 23H. Amazon.com : YAKIMA, MightyMount Roof Rack Mounting System for Factory Racks, Set of 4, 23H : Yakima Mightymount : Sports & Outdoors

Not sure if that really helps, but it is at least something.

Do you have any pictures by chance? I have a pair of plano cases going on the roof for the holiday weekend. It's a shorter trip, so not too concerned with using a combination of cam and ratchet straps with loop attachments to the rails. I have a longer trip coming later this summer, so would be looking at more robust solutions for that one.

I am essentially doing what you see in the updates here:

TRD Pro (2019+) Roof Rack Install Guide & Parts List - 5th Gen 4Runner

only I am using the mighty mounts instead of drilling the rails and am running a piece of aluminum along each side of the inside of the case and putting the fasteners on top to distribute more of the force than just the 4 points touching.

I have the hardware, but just got back from a different trip and am out and in as work is making me fly again. Should have it done in a few weeks and will post an update. I don't expect an issue as the mounts are the same hardware I use for the traction boards, all be it a bit shorter bolt. Those generate much more lift up there since they have 0 weight and are just big wind catchers. I will toss them up there this weekend and try to get a pick to show.

Yes.

I am currently in the process of setting up business. However, I do have kits ready to go.
Please PM me and we can set something up.
