It's too bad there isn't a way to limit the travel of the gas shock. I have the same problem on our 2020, it hits the garage door if you don't hang onto the hatch.

Get a new truck, it's ruined. Touch up paint is more noticeable than leaving it alone sometimes because of how blotchy it comes out. I find that doing it very slowing with a toothpick works the best. It took me forever last time because I literally dotted it with the tip of the toothpick very slowly. Looks okay, but still noticeable.

Kind of makes me glad we can't get a car in our garage, and have to unload on the driveway:-). Although, with a 2010 TE, I have enough other scratches this wouldn't bother me, plus there's the whole tire blowout ripped off the mudflap thing I have going on.

Seriously, take the advice above, and also look for a YouTube video on how to do this. Done reasonably well, it won't be noticeable. Done wrong, and your eyes will be drawn to it every time you look at the hatch, even though it's very small.

Somewhere on here a member made a "limit strap" for the rear hatch so it wouldn't open all the way and interfere with a Batwing Awning. Same principle for the garage door. I looked at doing it myself but decided on just using pipe insulation on the parts of the garage door that would hit the hatch when open.

i cut up a pool noodle into a short section, put a slit in it, and sllid it over the part of the garage door that always hits the hatch. I keep the other half in the back so I can use is to wedge between at other locations , like the parking garage i park in for work.

Don't waste your time, paint takes practice.

Spend the money to have it done correctly.

Got quoted 75$ for a professional to touch it up or $250 to make it ''disappear''. 250 bucks. I'll most likely be going for the 250 ''disappear'' option. sucks something as dumb as opening the rear hatch and unloading some stuff is digging in my pockets for 250 haha, I already put foam on the garage door metal extended part so it won't happen again. I might go ahead and see if he can fix some other cosmetic issues on it like a small dent on the front driver fender that was there when I bought this beast used. But I freaking love this 4Runner hopefully it lasts me 10+ more years until gas gets carbon taxed and phased out.

Then I would be touching up my noggin instead. When it's cold, the struts don't always extend fully and I hit my head on the tailgate.

Not if you have 9' doors

That said, mine has a nice bunch of scratches on the tailgate from the previous owner who obviously had shorter doors. I care not. It's the war wagon, my battle machine. At 140k I'm just glad it works as well as it does and still looks "pretty good"

Shoot it looks like someone even scraped my door with a front bumper in a hotel parking lot or something like that. Meh whatever. You don't even see it unless you are looking for it.

I made one of these to eliminate that problem. Can be a PIA sometimes, but no more scratches on the tailgate.
