I do not know but I think Toyota is not going to have a new version of the 4Runner for a little while for whatever reason and with the Bronco coming out and the ever-present Jeep line out there, they want to get whatever sales are possible from the market. Adding little dodads here and there cost next to nothing and might entice people planing to essentially drive back and forth from the mall, work and to head out to the local state park for a weekend picnic.
I am curious other the people here who recently purchase TRD in a special color would not have made that purchase if they would have known then that a Trail Edition was going to be released that offered the same color.

Looking around, it seems that Jeep is the only manufacturer making a direct-ish competitor to the 4Runner. I personally think that most 4Runner owners wouldn't get a Jeep if a Runner didn't exist - they'd probably go tamer, like Explorer/Highlander. As most of us know, Jeep vehicles are plagued with quality problems. But other than these two, who makes a B-O-F SUV like the 4Runner these days? Chevy? Ford? Chrysler? Nissan? Honda doesn't even make a truck, nor Subaru. The last closest thing was the Pathfinder/Xterra, and Nissan bailed on those, turning the Pathfinder into a minivan. At least Toyota hasn't abandoned their unique vehicle.

From what I've seen, 4Runner sales slipped slightly in 2019 vs 2018, after ten consecutive years of increasing sales. 2018 was the highest sales year EVER for this truck. I would argue that number is the most compelling thing that keeps the 4Runner alive today with so few changes.

This may be one of the things Toyota has been waiting for, and may be part of the reason for the new trims - to take advantage of 4Runner manufacturing capacity in light of the sales slippage, while they gear up for the replacement.

Here's another thing I think they'll do: with the new Bronco line coming out, I believe they'll be watching very closely. How will people react to a second option? What will they like about it, or dislike? They'll watch how it sells, the demographics of the buyers, what people think of it. What quality problems are there? What's great about it? They'll buy a few and take them apart. And after a couple years (sorry), I believe we'll see the response.

So I believe competition from the Bronco will be a good thing. It'll force Toyota's hand a bit, and folks on this forum will hopefully get what they've been asking for.

But also - I agree. If a v8 is too much to ask, I'd love to have at least just have a modern engine and transmission. Is that too much to ask? Fawk - just let us have 6th gear in the transmission we already have! It's already physically inside there. Put some 4.30 diffs in and the 6 speed valve body and open up the 6th gear for highway cruising.

Oh - and if a Bronco comes stock with 35" tires and a Wrangler can bolt them on with no mods, Toyota has got to get their shit together in the tire clearance department.

All very good points. Let's hope competition breeds innovation.

The one thing I didn't consider when I bought my 4runner is the Toyota Land Cruiser. Kinda has everything I want, and the 5.7 v8. They are so crazy expensive though. But the cost of a new 4runner you are gonna get a 7-8 year old land cruiser with 60k miles on it. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

I almost bit on a new "Heritage Edition" Land Cruiser when I was looking at my Pro. I love them but I don't love them $90,000 worth.

I do not necessarily disagree with your statement, especially your closing comment. I do however think that the Cherokee is a substitute for the 4Runner while the Wrangler may be less so. While I believe it is now built on a car body the Cherokee line certainly represents an alternative to the 4Runner especially for those who might consider 2WD 4Runner. In any event, the entrance of the Bronco in the market will certainly impact everyone in the market space if the hype and apparent anticipation in the market extends into robust sales.

I for one like the cooler and the darker rims and would consider getting them aftermarket for my 2019 TRD ORP. Don't care for the basket though.

Based on your signature block, you had a tundra pro before the runner. Curious how they compare. Noticable difference in power?

Yes. All trail editions have MTS, Crawl, and a rear locking differential. And a hood scoop. They were identical to the current TRD OR model, just a different name. All pre 2021 trail editions.

The new one still has SR5 badges too. So I don't know if they're calling it SR5 trail? Or something else.

i hope they give it a different name. but the first paragraph in the article says:
