SR5 or TRD

Hi Folks.

My 2016 SR5 has 40k on it. I have not done as much as I had planned to do with it but the few occasions when its capabilities were needed, I was impressed.

I don't do intentional off-roading that requires a "rig"; it just isn't my hobby. The vehicle is there to help me get there and I think I should have more than I need.
This winter I drove around my SR5 and at some point the 4x4 knob was stuck so I could not bring it back to 2x anymore without being persuasive. I was then thinking perhaps a mechanical system would be more dependable. I have no other complaints about my T4R.

Driving off roads is not my hobby but I definitely enjoy it. Money not being a factor, is there a benefit to the TRD blends of the T4R?

Thanks a lot.

Farzad

Stick with the SR5 and exercise 4WD more often.
Zero reason for anything more based on your post.

its recommended to put in 4x4 at least once per month. The actuator can stick if not used.
My 03 is a pain to get into 4x4 now, as when I purchased my 16 it became my daily driver and the 03 got little use over the last 3 years.

Go TRD off road. Just inside parts are nicer. I did switch my wife's truck and she is very happy. As well with 2020 she got extra safety, nicer dash and much better nav with apple car play.

I recently did a lot of research on all the different types of 4WD on the 4Runner. From what you mentioned it seems the SR5 will best suit your needs. Here’s why.

The SR5 has the following types of gear settings
2WD
H4F (High 4x4 Free)
H4L (High 4x4 Locked)
L4L (Low 4x4 Locked)

The H4F is essentially a limited AWD mode. I say limited because it recommended only to be used when driving 55 mph or less. This is very handy for snow, heavy rain and moderate off-roading. You can drive with this on all the time if you wish as long as you don’t go over 55 mph with slight reduction in fuel economy.

The H4L locks the center differential. This turns it into a true 4WD for medium off-roading or where you are driving on snow only. It provides better traction because all your wheels are turning at the same speed. The drawback is that your turning radius will be reduced. Do not drive on pavement because turning can cause the gears to bind which can damage them. This link provides a better explanation.

YouTube

The L4L provide more torque for heavy off-roading albite at lower speeds

The TRD has a different type transfer case. As a result it does not have a H4F or limited All Wheel Drive capability. It only has H2 (2WD), H4 (4WD) and L4 (4WD). But in addition to this is has a “Crawl” and “Multi Terrain” select feature that gives it heavy off-road and rock crawling capabilities.

I have a TRD Pro and I love it. However, I use to have a Isuzu Trooper that had a selectable AWD function. I do miss that capability when driving in heavy rain or mix snow and pavement driving

That is not correct. The SR5 has the exact same transfer case as the TRD Off Road/Trail and TRD PRO. The OR and PRO have a mechanically actuated transfer case, while the SR5 is electronically actuated AKA the "knob".

The H4F setting is only available on the completely different AWD system used on the Limited models.

In the interior photos it shows the SR5 and the Limited with the same knob so I assumed they had the same capabilities with the exception that the Limited is AWD only with the option to lock the transfer case. After zooming in on the photo of the knob I see there is no H4F gear on it. Thanks for clarifying that.

I’m still adjusting to the 4Runner. My Trooper had 2WD, part time AWD, plus H4 & H2.

Well in that case Farzed I would go with the Limited but if you’re happy with the SR5 and money isn’t a issue then go with the TRD

No worries. It's an honest and easy mistake to make.

Also wrong is speed restriction. 4H allows any speed over 55 once engaged. The speed limit of 55 is only for shifting in and out of 4H

Get an SR5.

The Off Road trim will cost you an extra $2,000 for a few offroad nannies that you won't even use.
