forged vs cast wheel benefits on 4runner?

I know that forged wheels are going to be stronger and usually lighter, but on the 4runner is there really any benefit the added strength, with a good amount of tire to take most impacts?

I have 3 pieces forged wheels on my other car, and wouldn't mind putting some forged monoblocks like TE37's etc on the 4runner, but it is hard to see any benefit in this application given them being 2-3 times the cost of cast wheels like SCS.

Has anyone cracked or bent a cast wheel on the 4runner? On cars I see lots of threads about cracked cheap cast wheels, but havent seen any on a 4runner or tacoma. I have cracked a cast wheel myself a long time ago as well hitting a massive pothole(in a car) but with thin tires.

Also, on a side note is it worth it to buy wheels with real beadlocks for possible future use going on rockier terrain? or are they more trouble than they are worth?

You shouldn't be taking any rim shots with huge sidewalls

And beadlocks aren't street legal in most places. They're also only useful if you're going to be running such a low pressure that you risk losing the bead (i.e. below 8psi or something real low).

I have te37 on my tacoma and scs on my 4runner. Te37 added bonus is how much lighter they are, which offset the increased tire weight from going bigger and more aggressive. They scs ray10s on the 4runner weigh a full 10lbs more each, but i have evwry confidence they are plenty strong. A lot of the scs have fake beadlocks, bonus being the rings can be replaced very easily if you do mess them up off road.

Do you actually feel any noticeable difference accelerating etc with the weight difference?

So I guess besides weight, there is no real advantage to forged wheels on this platform. Even then, scs and other cast wheels are still lighter than OEM, but not sure if the weight savings is really noticeable in real world acceleration or mpg

having a lighter wallet also helps your acceleration when you blow money on forged wheels

A 275/70 R17 tire weighs about 50-60 lbs. A typical 17" cast rim tips the scales in the 25-28 lb range. So all up, you're looking at 300-350 lbs of unsprung weight. I'm doubting you'd even notice the 10-15lbs weight savings you'd get from forged wheels.

The rotational inertia difference of slightly lighter wheels isn't very important. In rough terms 2lb of wheel is worth 1lb of tire weight in our size of wheel/tire. So a 2lb lighter wheel is about the same as a 1lb lighter tire.

Thanks. I guess in the big picture its not worth it then. No reason for the added strength with that much tire cushioning it, and the weight difference "feel" will be negligible. it seems most cast wheels such as rrw or scs etc are still a lot lighter than the oem trail wheels anyway still resulting in an overall weight savings.

I got the te37 because i like them. It’s in no way necessary. Buy what you like and don’t look back.
