4runner Tow Hooks - Recovery Points
Hey Guys!
Just wanted to share the good news. I took a gamble on some RedRock "Tacoma" recovery hooks from Extreme Terrain (not shilling, if you find them somewhere else grab em)
RedRock 4x4 Tacoma Tow Hook Kit - Black TT2398
I wasn't sure if they would fit the bolt pattern drilled into the 5th gen frame, but they totally fit!
I'm happy to have two of these installed because this allows me to remove the D-ring and frees up my tow hitch for a tire carrier or bike rack again. Plus distributing the recovery over two separate points is a bit safer.
Check em out!

Are these just for the rear of the 4Runner or is there a mounting location near the front also?

Tacoma and 4R share the same frame, so not surprising that they bolted up

Any chance you could post a straight-on photo with the hitch in the picture so we can get an idea of how much these hang down?
Considering this option but also have my hitch occupied so wondering if they will be blocked by my hitch setup. Thanks

20 bucks ey?
ARB would brand them and sell them for 250 and people would still buy them.

They may share some parts but they absolutely don't share the same platform.
Tacoma = Hilux
4R = Land Cruiser Prada
There is however a Hilux based SUV called the Fortuner.

The exhaust isn't in the way on the passenger side?

Is the Hilux Surf based on the Prada, too? Does that still exist?

Can some salt dogs with alot of time with recoveries chime in here?
Single recovery point at the tow hitch vs two hooks for a bridle strap
I get the bridle strap spreads the load. Seems to me the factory hitch would be plenty strong to take the weight of the vehicle? Perhaps not if you're super bogged and a tractor pulls you out...

You would need to look it up but just based on memory I think the Surf was the local Japanese version of the 4R. Not sure if I'm remembering correctly and no clue if it's still a thing over there.

Using the front two makes sense to spread out the load especially if in deep mud but as one who has been stuck in almost every possible way (including tractors) I would say that if the tow hitch isn't going to work then best to get a crane to lift you out.

I get using it in the front. I just don't get doing it in the back if the tow hitch is available.

these don't look stronger than the front factory loops (front loops are a lot more substantial than the bolt on rear loop)

They have a 10,000 LB capacity each which will be split with a brindle. They are plenty strong.
Front loops are tie downs. They are not designed for recoveries despite people hanging red d shackles from them ricer style. I'm sure they will work in most cases and I wouldn't not use them if that's all I had. Let's just be clear tho. They are for strapping the truck down at sea or on a flatbed.

The front ones have been debated here for many years so I'm not going to revisit the issue now other than to say more than a few of us have used them for all sorts of recovering without drama. IF they were only there for transport then there would have been much MUCH cheaper options for them to use.
But the issue in this thread is these rear hooks compared to the hitch.
