Adding newer 4Runner head unit to 5th gen (2014)

Hi all!

I searched around but wasn’t able to find anything. I desperately want CarPlay in my 2014 T4R. I considered an aftermarket unit, but then I stumbled across this: Fits for Toyota 4Runner WIFI Android 8.1 Radio GPS Navigation Car DVD Stereo | eBay

Would something like that work? Anyone tried?

Looks like that is the T8 headunit. There is a newer version called the T9. I dont have any experience with it but if you search youtube there are a lot of reviews (some sponsored) of the units. General consensus is that they have some lag issues that may have been solved in the newer unit (T9).

I would love to be able to install the 2020 head unit. I don't know why it won't work, but my dealer said that it wouldn't be possible.

Those Android units are typically garbage. A newer OEM unit may have a different pinout which wouldn't work with the earlier models. I just threw in a Pioneer headunit and called it a day.

Free Shipping 9" Android 8.1 T9 4+64G Car Multimedia Stereo Radio Audio DVD GPS Navigation Sat Nav Head Unit for Toyota 4Runner 2014-2019

this is a reputable link in case you decide to buy.

i did buy a T8 unit and didn't like the audio quality. features over all were nice and the screen size is amazing.... but the audio quality is really garbage in my opinion. Not sure if the T9 unit improved.... perhaps not.

That's interesting. I wonder why?

I have a 2020 and I just assumed that they were just plug-and-play units that people could retrofit into older models.
