5th Generation (2020). Running boards wont fit - what is this peice?

Hi all,
Just purchased a 2020 4 Runner and I have some running boards I wanted to install but they don't fit because of this black piece in the picture. It gets in the way, can someone tell me what it's called and can it be removed and still look good?

I took the runningboards off my 4th generation and it looks like the holes in the frame will line up and can be installed on the new 5th gen but the black piece gets in the way. The boards are 72 " long but I only have 68" of space. Even if I were to buy new boards, everything I've found is 72 inches long.

Dealer want $1000 to install new ones, but that seems excessive since I can get boards for about $300 and the install should take 20 minutes. I'm guessing they would just take off the black piece if they were to do it?

Thanks, It seems like steps/nerf bar would fit but I don't like the look as well but I think it's going to be my only option.

Look on the for sale page for this site.
Guys are selling used running boards for the 5th Gen just to get them out of the garage. They are replacing them with sliders.

Ya, my problem isn't getting the running boards, I have them. They just wont fit because of that black piece behind the mud flaps.

That's because the ones you have are for the wrong vehicle. I don't think that old running boards are worth the hassle of modifying your NEW vehicle to make them fit.

I'd give you my 5th gen running boards for free if you lived in CO (if that gives you any indication as to how easy it is to get the right ones).

Does your 5th Gen have that piece on them. I've been looking for new ones but all the new ones I find say they're 72 inches long and I only have 68 inches of space, but to your point, maybe the new running boards would fit under that piece rather than butt up against them.

Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it. I have a friend that lives in CO but he's not a good enough friend to drive them down to Mass. for me. LOL

Yes it does, they all should (at least after 2014) aside from the limited.

all fifth gens have them since 2014. if you remove them, it will look less attractive.

just get 5th gen parts for your 5th gen and you'll be fine

Makes sense. I just didn't want to order them and find out they didn't fit.

Thanks

Been looking for a couple days, these say package is 73 inches but you're right, if I search the questions someone did respond that they're 68 inches. I'll take a look. Haven't been to Amazon to look yet. Just everywhere else.

I bought those first ones and put them on a 2018 SR5P - they fit even though it says they don't, but they hang down similar to tube steps so they don't look like running boards normally do. The irony is that they were actually useful because of that.

I now have an 2020 SR5P with the factory running boards and they look great but are basically useless. They are so tight to the floor that there really is no point in stepping on them.

Great, that's the kind of info I was looking for. Now that I know that black piece won't interfere with the install I'll find something I like and save myself the $1000 the dealer wants for install.

I need something my kids and mom can't get into the truck without some kind of running board.
