Cold Air Intake wanted for 2016 Limited T4R

I'm looking for suggestions on CAI for a 2016 Limited. Most sites I visit tell me the TRD CAI is not compatible with the Limited. So what is? I would love to go TRD, but what ever I choose I want a fully enclosed airbox CAI.

Any suggestions of experience?

The limited is no different than any other model. There is no reason for the TRD intake not to work on the limited. I have the TRD intake and I also have a Borla exhaust. Intake didn't do much but the exhaust made a big difference. RPM climbs faster, more passing power on the highway, definitely a nice improvement over stock. If you're looking for a little more power, start with the exhaust.

Your 4Runner comes with a cold air intake. I have the TRD, but there is no advantage except for some extra noise. You can add a reusable element filter if you desire. The TRD CAI is "compatible", but in 2014 Toyota added a smog pump to all 4Runners (not just limiteds). You can install it on your 2016 Limited, but there's a small tweak (I forget what it is and it isn't difficult).

I concur with the other poster that an aftermarket CAI won't do anything (noticeable or measurable in my opinion).

Thanks.
That what I thought. Most sites that sell the TRD CAI tell me its not compatible when I select "Limited". I enter SR5 and it changes showing that it will fit.

I was planning on upgrading the exhaust as well. I would think your performance now is a combination of CAI and exhaust upgrade. That's what I'm going for. More air in and more air out.

If you people search there are actual dyno results for the TRD CAI.

Any intake allowing more air into an engine will do something.

Trd CAI makes 5 to 8whp and 19tq. If you do a google search you can read the threads and see the dyno charts for a stock 5th gen before and after a TRD intake.

Have you compared the stock intake vs. the TRD CAI? How does it provide more air to the engine? It sucks air through the same fender hole. Sure the airflow path is slightly different, but it is negligible and extremely difficult to make a strong claim that it 'provides more air' to the engine.

I'll assume these are the dyno's you're referring to:
https://www.toyota-4runner.org/1936161-post1.html

Summarized WHP peak:
1-17-2015: Stock = 219.9
2-21-15: TRD CAI = 224.6
12-18-15: TRD CAI + Exhaust = 204
12-21-15: TRD CAI + Exhaust + URD Y = 209.4

I've only cited power here, as torque varies with speed / rpm, while power doesn't care about wheel size / gearing.

He only runs a single dyno run (the 3rd and 4th test links don't work and I'm not hunting them down, and they show a decrease in power). This allows for lots of variability such as warm up, open/closed loop operation, and have the long term trims fully adjusted. A 3% change isn't measurable off a single dyno run. Diff temps, trans temps, rad temps (is the thermostat cycled open / close at that exact time can change the pressure no the water pump = system drag, etc.) all impact the drivetrain loses and power delivered to the ground.

It's in my sig, but I'll link it here with my more detailed assessment:

"Maybe there's something there, maybe there isn't"... it is ~ 1 lb lighter!

The OEM intake is a cold are intake however it has it's share of restrictions. The TRD intake does make a difference but it's very minimal. For the $ it's really not worth it but I did it anyway. When I still had the stock intake under the hood, I swapped in an AFE Pro Dry filter, removed the restrictor cone on the inlet side, and installed the TRD air cone rather than the OEM scoop on the inlet side. I did notice a slight bump in higher RPM passing power. When I swapped to the TRD intake, I nothing no improvement over what I had already done to the OEM intake. When I put the Borla muffler on I noticed a nice bump in power, a lot more than I expected. I actually don't like how it sounds but I won't remove it because I like the power increase. I may end up removing my TRD intake and selling it and going back to my modified OEM intake and maybe modify it a little more to see what I can get out of it. Who knows what the future holds!

the TRD CAI will fit. i bought mine on 40% TRD sale, it sat in the garage for some months, finally installed it, and found that the money i spent (while it being on sale) was NOT worth the CAI. it looks cool under the hood though. my advise is to save money and use it on the TRD exhaust if you want.

within a week I installed the TRD Exhaust and i love the sound of it. first few weeks it had more drone / harshness but after about 5 to 6 weeks of use it s at its sweetest point of producing sound that i like.
