The first time I did the turkey baster I cycled the fluid by winding the wheel a couple times. I did this 4-5 times and only used about 1/2 qt. It is time consuming. Sucking out the res only gets 3-4oz. I could have pulled the return line but didn’t have a way to plug the res at the time.
Since then I just suck the reservoir every time I change the oil. Working well so far. I use the M1 Dexron III but I would have no problem using Max-Life. I’ve finally used a qt of fluid over the past 4 years.

Update for anyone that's interested.

I double checked the fluid I'm using, and it's Dexron 6 compatible....after lots of reading, Dexron 6 is supposed to be backwards compatible with 2 and 3.

I did another drain and refill over the summer, and last week did 2 more. Each time it was a short drive to get turns lock to lock and circulate as much fluid as possible.

Smooth like butter now. No leaks.

I'll repeat every 25-30k miles from here on out.

correct.. return lines are typically on top... transmission cooler, ps fluid, oil cooler, etc etc.. fluid is pulled from the bottom hoses because of air bubbles and so on that could cause a disruption in the flow of fluid within the hoses. Gravity is more reliable than mechanical/electronic pumps and bubbles should rise to the top before making it into hoses.
