New aFe Momentum GT Intake
Have not seen anyone talking about this intake yet, so thought I would post my thoughts.
When I ordered the intake, aFe emailed and said that I had pre-ordered and the first batch was still being produced. 2-3 weeks later they shipped.
Install was easy. Everything fit as expected. Loved how the location of the MAF was essentially the same (unlike the TRD intake) and the hose barb was brass (unlike the K&N). Also liked how it draws air form the passenger side wheel well (unlike the K&N which draws from the engine bay). You can also open a plug and draw additional air form the engine bay. They make a scoop for the Tacoma that draws air from the front of the engine bay and fits to that opening.
According to aFe's website, this is not the loudest intake they make. Probably because the box is relatively sealed?
Its definitely an increase in power. 19hp? Not sure. It seems to roll easier, definitely accelerates faster. Sounds great at the top.... but holy shit it drinks gas. You can basically see the fuel gauge move. lol
This week I reset the MPG meter and tried to be good. MPGs went up .8-1 mpg for my commute. And now back to stomping on it and making noise.
The airbox is bigger than stock and bigger than aFe's other kit. I would love to do the Shockworks dual battery kit. Need to make sure those two kits will play nice together. I will post additional pics later or check out the video.
Here is an install video for people with nothing better to do with their evenings.

I put one of these exact same intakes on my 2016 Tacoma and HATED it. Thing was so damn loud the sound waves actually caused interior panels to vibrate. Hope they toned it down for the 4R

OMG, that would suck. So nerd moment... I have a dB meter. I have not done a great job of working out the difference yet. But I doubt it will be measurable, unless you are at high RPMs. At rest, inside, don't think there is a difference.

Actually just ordered mine earlier this week. Which filter did you go with? I went with the ProDryS. Still haven't heard if mine has shipped yet.

Might give them a call. I called them about a week before it shipped, they said they were waiting on the filters. Seemed like they were pretty transparent about where their logistics were at.

I saw this CAI last week and was looking for more information on it. I also happened to see this thread get posted. I certainly appreciate the information, especially that it's still very new explains why there wasn't any information on it! I'm still very interested (maybe once the tax return comes in).
As I'm not interested in the oiled filters and I've frequently found leaves, bugs and other small debris in my air filters, I pinged aFe about a pre-filter. The responded that one should be available sometime in the next few weeks.
I also asked about fitment of the LC or Taco scoop to the 4Runner, and got back a big negatory on that one. However, I sent the below to them. Maybe if we can get someone in SoCal to volunteer their truck we can get a functional air scoop out of this!

While not a large opening, removing the factory trim piece should give a large enough opening to be useful as an auxiliary air intake. Nobody else has a kit for this. The reason for this is twofold, a functional air scoop is always a benefit over a nonfunctional piece of plastic, and the intake for it is higher than the stock intake, serving as a short snorkel for those who off-road. The true snorkel kits are not popular as they require cutting a large hole in the passenger front fender, go much higher than the majority of users ever need, and are somewhat unsightly.
I realize the 4Runner isn’t exactly a performance vehicle, and there are already several CAI on the market. Making the hood scoop functional would certainly set aFe apart from the rest! Sadly I’m not in California to volunteer my vehicle for development. However if posted requesting a volunteer in 5th gen T4Rs - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum in exchange for a free or discounted intake, I’m sure you’d have several ready volunteers!
|
EDIT: I got a response back from aFe, said they would forward the suggestions on to the development department in hopes of getting scoop sooner than later.

interesting about the K&N version, what benefit would that provide?? going from a stock CAI to an aftermarket "HAI" intake that draws hot engine bay air doesn't make sense to me...

"up to" +19 hp, basically it could only be +1 hp and they're not lying in their statement.
I have a JWT pop-charger on my 350Z. Technically it's a short ram warm intake. But in the Z community it does the same job as CAI's and costs 1/2 as much.
Admittedly I haven't taken apart a 4runner engine, but I don't see an engine like this benefiting much from additional air. Especially if the rest of the exhaust system remains stock. More air in, but same air out. You'd need a higher flow exhaust and/or cats in order to open up the system and let it breathe better for increased performance.
