Next headlights after the XBs
I’m thinking of switching out the XBs for something different. I can’t decide if I should go to the Alpharex pro with HIDs, a true retrofit with my original housings, or an aftermarket hid kit.
I live in a cold climate which is why I am leaning towards the hids.
Anyone here have experience with true retrofits?

I admit to having limited knowledge in this field. If you live in a cold climate and are facing the possibility of snow and ice frequently, wouldn't halogens be the better way to go? I doubt the HIDs get as hot as some bright halogen bulbs, which might prevent ice and snow buildup on the lenses. Again, a bit of a novice on this stuff though

I know when I was in Moab a few weeks ago I appreciated having halogens. My LED fogs were completely useless and frozen over. However, I live in TX and don't need to worry about snow. OP, are the Morimoto's good??

Whatever you do, don't get the Morimoto full headlights. They're awful. Im back to running my XD HID setup, 6000K bulbs which have been on since 2015 with no issues. They have the operating temps on their website.

I have the Morimoto XB full light and love them! They have gotten great reviews and I am constantly asked by other 4Runner owners in my area where did I get those.
What am I missing? Truth be told Toyota continues to fail in some areas. $50,000 vehicle should come with updated lighting and not a decade plus old headlights.

Ok, just read the other thread on Nova headlights. Got it now what the issue is for some concerning the XB. I have not noticed that specific concern while driving. I have been happy with the XB thus far, but maybe I am just a light amateur at this point.

Sorry for the vagueness. Im referring to these headlights by morimoto, the tri-LED full light w/ the sequential blinker and running lights. Beam pattern was terrible. Narrow, and... i guess "streaky" would be the best description. Also, the resistors were terrible, even after putting on the higher capacity ones they sent me id get hyperflash if the blinkers were on longer than 30 seconds. also had issues wit the fitment. They look good at first, but on closer inspection you'll see the overall execution is pretty sloppy.

stock OEM housings w/ HID kit if you want the best lighting output.
The rest of your LED solutions are just compromises.
Whether or not those compromise is worth your hard earned green backs is up to you guys.....

For my money and experience, there's no better solution than a straight projector retrofit vs these overpriced chinese headlights. I've heard of nothing but issues with the XB's and I'm a Morimoto fan. I had a Morimoto D2S projector retrofit in my 4th gen, and I'm doing an MLED 2.0 retrofit into my 5th gen.
Honestly I think my current Morimoto HID setup in a stock projector has better light output than the XB's, I have not been impressed with them in the least.

I have a review on these. Alpharex Pros with 4300k HID, but here's the most recent pic after final aiming adjustments and a little more broken in. I originally had them aimed too high and lost a lot of side coverage. With proper aiming I get some side coverage back, which makes sense cause the beam pattern in projectors is like half a cone.
Pic taken with phone resting on top of steering wheel.
