You could easily wire it direct and throw a toggle/push inline so that it is on demand.

I would be super cool it the meter was a push button switch itself.
Thanks @jrandom . That's a great idea. I might email the good folks in Australia and suggest they give you a dozen as a royalty :-).

I'm more interested in watching the voltage when the vehicle isn't on, specifically when I am out doing trips to make sure I don't run down the battery too far at night when I use it for lighting etc. So I think I'll go with your second suggestion about an in-line switch.

I've never managed to find a toggle that fits in the 4Runner blank that can work without a relay ... anyone else out there ever seen one? The more stock looking the better.

Else, I guess I'll just drill a hole in one of the blanks next to where I put in the voltmeter and use something like this, which will still be pretty discrete hopefully.

I am pretty sure you could use one of the regular ~3amp 150 Toyota push buttons, the voltage meter isn’t going to draw much power to run. I’d be really surprised if it drew anywhere near 3 amps.

Just checked, from their website: Dual Battery Volt Meter for Toyota Prado 150, Landcruiser 200, 2016 Hilux - Solid Kit

Low current draw, only 14 mA per panel (0.336 Ah per day)
There you go

Thank you! I'll give it a whirl and use a 2A fuse just in case. I'll try and remember to report back when I get around to it - have some other wiring to take care of first.

OK, for anyone else that shows up on this thread and wants to know how to use an AOB switch (what I used) to power an in-dash voltmeter (like this one), here's what I did:

Note, the switch is on the negative because the gauge requires each volt meter to be wired independently to the battery ... this way one switch can still control both. Hence the funky red (switch) to ground (voltmeter).

I've had this one for years now. Always on and seems to be pretty accurate as well. Don't remember where it came from, but I see others that look the same listed in other post.

Thanks. I only need one display since I don’t have an aux battery.

Thanks. That looks like it might fit, plus it uses the connector to the 12 volt outlet. I'll order it and see if it fits.

Received this a yesterday and installed today.

Pros:
1. Fits nicely in any of the 4Runner blank switch places.
2. Plug and play. Connects to the 12 volt outlet connectors. No wire cutting, tapping, or fuse taps needed.
3. Nice long wire (4 feet) so you can place it in any of the blank switch places and have it reach the 12 volt outlet.

Cons:
1. Very dim. Impossible to see in the day with sunglasses on.
2. Voltage display is quite low. Display showed 13.1 volts, while my precision voltmeter displayed 13.42 volts.
3. Display voltage drops a couple tenths if you plug in a device to charge, such as my iPhone. I can't believe the system voltage drops that much.
