Spare Tire location tire size limits

Planning on upsizing tires to 285's. When upsizing on my GMC, I was able to buy a full sized used tire and mount underneath in the stock location. What is the concensus with a 5th gen? (I'm trying to avoid changing multiple tires if I get a rear flat)

Yeah, it'll fit no problem. I ran a 285 spare.

285/70/17 will fit. I doubt 285/75/17 will fit. You may have to pull it towards the bumper a little on the last bit of cranking to keep it from hitting the KDSS sway bar on KDSS models. It does hang down a little bit so on departures you could scrape the tire some.

I run a 275/60R20 (GY Duratrac) in the spare of my wife's truck that I measured out to be 33.5" true. No issues at all, but just barely fits.
