Glad it worked out for you! I've done it with two 4Runners now and never had any rattle at all. They clicked right back in no problem. Enjoy the extra storage! 👍

These trays are an abomination to the 4Runner series, and just one more thing I really dislike about my new 5th gen. What was so bad about the container lids used on the 3rd and 4th gen 4Runners? It would be great if somebody designed an aftermarket container that could be set into the space when the tray is removed.

This! My next DIY is going to be to figure out a permanent mount for a battery box (either custom or a goal zero like system) there that is secure and can tap into the cables that run underneath it. My ultimate setup would be if I could find a way to permanently mount a 50Ah lithium battery there.

Any idea whether the area is safe to mount electronics inside the cavity? I've seen pictures that look like the area accumulates a lot of dust so was wondering if it is ok to mount an MPPT in there...

I'd be most curious about the effects of heat on a semi-permanently installed Li battery in there.

My intention was/is to remove the tray and fab a flat, up-sized mount so that the battery sits on top not inside the storage cubby (basically a bolted on battery box that can accommodate a 50 Ah Battleborn), though I am considering mounting an MPPT in that storage space.

I did manage to remove both rear wheel well trays on my 2016 5th gen without breaking the clips.

It is tight to say the least getting a (big) hand in there but with patience it can be done. Further, the temp today was 80F+ so I suspect that helps with pliability. I'm sure my attempt would have resulted in breaking the screw tabs if this was being done in the cold.

Viewing the attached pic (below): The 4 problem children (aka the screws) are near center on the white rag. The tools used to remove the 4 problem children are on the white rag as well. The tools not on the white rag, well we all know what happened during the removal of the passenger (inverter) side tray, best to not give it attention.

Nice 4R! I just bought a 2019 SR5 4 x 4 in Nautical Blue. Only 43K on the odometer and I put 1500 of those miles on myself. Very nice truck.

So I decided to carry the removable trays one step further.

First, I had some leftover indoor/outdoor carpet from my 4runner sleeping platform project (I'll be posting about that soon). So I cut out pieces to pad the tray bottoms. Seem to fit nicely.

I deferred gluing them down in case during my project journey I find the need to do any drilling on the tray bottom (eg. for hangers or clips on the underside to hold things in the wheel well).

Next I added clips in an attempt to provide the ability to pull/remove the trays.
I'll be honest, for this first attempt, the key split rings seem kinda flimsy when pulling on them. Perhaps there is something more robust???

In any event, the split key rings are ~5/8" I.D., two holes (#32 0.116" bit) per ring spaced ~1/2inch apart.
