You're one of the lucky ones. I worked for a BMW parts house for almost 20 years. Those things were horrible. When I found out my last E46 had 100k on the pump I changed it that night. And the radiator and expansion tank. So glad I don't have any more BMW's.

Evwn when it died it wasnt a big deal, it wasnt a catastrophic failure it just became less effective and started cooling a lot less efficiently and i think i waited till that weekend or the next to replace.

Yea, just got quoted for over $700 for my water pump to be replaced because it is "leaking" per my local dealership. I only have 110K miles on the ODO so I'll have to get someone else to look at it before I take any drastic action(s).

I wouldn't worry about the WP in this case.

I did have a GM that went through 3, 3! water pumps in 50k miles. Man, I hated that vehicle, as the water pump wasn't even 20% of the major issues I had with it (from new).

Sorry, got off on a tangent here.

Haha yea, that's what I thought but glad to have this forum to confirm my gut feeling! As for GM, I'll never go back to GM again haha. The crap that my parents and (eventually) I had to deal with by GM-made vehicles was absurd. No horror story surprises me anymore when it comes to GM.

I've had to replace 1 in 16 years/63K miles on my GM.

i've never had a water pump leak at 150000 miles. you might want to look into your radiator instead. mine leaked at around 100000 miles. good thing i noticed it. the radiator gets a lot of beating in my opinion from road debri.

250K miles on a 2014 SR5 and no issues with the water pump so far. As others posted, they are designed to weep prior to failure. So you will get a warning.

$700 to replace a water pump is a joke. I'll pay myself to do it.

Thanks for the insight. I'll check mine out with my uneducated eye and see if there is anything unusual going on haha.

You have to remove the fan shroud, fan, and pretty much all of the accessories on the front of the engine as it spans most of the front of the block.

I replaced mine at about 280k miles because I was changing my failed alternator and a noisy idler and figured, I might as well. The original water pump was still fine.

Don't get me started with the E9X electric water pumps........ always going out under 100k.

I replaced the water pump on my '99 K2500 Suburban diesel last summer. It started leaking when I arrived at our Montana home. Took me a couple hours.

Key point is to use the best quality water pump, in this case AC Delco. Also it is an upgrade from stock with a higher flow rate and a spin on hub that can take the larger DuraMax Fan blade. All these little enhancements have a cumulative impact on engine temps which is critical in a diesel.
