The biggest difference was during the rain the other day... way stickier than the Terra grapplers. I wonder if all of these things are the reason they updated the tires on the Pro for 2021?
I swear the press photos for the 2021 (in Lunar Rock) still had Terra Grapplers on them. What are they shipping with?

When I had my Terra Grapplers pulled at Discount Tire, they were amazed at the DOT code given the fact the tire has been out of production through standard channels by Nitto for awhile. Appears Nitto has done batch runs solely for Toyota for OEM use the last year or two...

My understanding is that Nitto has updated the Terra Grappler tire itself specifically for Toyota in order to improve it over last years model. There was mention of it in a couple of articles I read discussing the updates.

Can’t find the article now of course but it talked about a slight adjustment to the tire compound. Only going by what the article said from one source so take it with a grain of salt

IMHO: it is “wishful thinking” to consider that Nitto did something “special” for 4Runners…

However, I am on third set of Nitto TG (had the original and two of G2) … and even tried Falken Wildpeak at3 in between and then reverted back to Nitto…

Again IMHO, Nitto is very good all around AT tire that serves my needs. But I am definitely interested in opinions\reviews of other tires... and particularly in Toyo Open Country AT3… so please keep us posted as you get more miles and experience with those.

I've had my stock size E load set for a week now, with mostly city driving and ~300 highway miles. No where near enough for a proper review, but here are my first impressions:
  • Louder than stock Dunlops, but very quiet for an AT for both city and highway.
  • No/marginal difference in fuel economy.
  • No/marginal difference in driving feel. (Total MoI for set of Toyo is ~40x total MoI for stock tire set)
  • Good wet/dry traction.
  • Balanced well; still a tiny bit of steering shake at highway speed, but greatly reduced from stock.

Overall, I think these will be my new go-to tire, as they are made better than the Falkens (don't have to worry about the made in China gamble,) are a more modern design than KO2s, and are newer/more aggressive than TG G2s.

According to my tire guy these are some of the best road force numbers he has seen for a truck tire. He also talked a lot about checking the DOT dates to make sure you get a recent set. A lot of the tires from Discount sit in a warehouse for a long time and they have issues with balancing (that’s what he said at least).
I’m looking at these also Horizon for my AG pro since I lifted with the Eibach springs. 285’s mounted on my F5’s. I have the wheels just need the tires.

Anyone that has more miles on these tires care to share how they've been? Looking to get a set soon, so hoping for some last minute inputs, thanks!

3800 mile update

We just got back from our Colorado trip, and thought I would give you all update. Unfortunately we were not able to find any snow and had very limited amounts of rain. Therefore I cannot comment on how well the tires perform in frozen/wet conditions.

A few quantifying variables first:
- numbers include two humans and a 60# Rhodesian Ridgeback/Lab mix
- no lift (we'll get into that in a bit) or other consequential mods (I will say that the H11 -> H9 low beam swap is well worth the time and $10)
- 30mph+ crosswinds in the prairie states

On the way out to and back from Colorado, we averaged 18.9 mpg and 72 mph. This is inline with previous westward trips. Taking into consideration the hills and significant winds, I'm actually pretty happy that we saw no decrease in miles per gallon in comparison to the ATIIs. For reference: I typically get around 19 mpg on my ~60 mile daily work round trip (mixed city and highway). While I do not have a SPL meter, anecdotally both my wife and I thought highway noise was lower with the ATIIIs. This was after removing the foam sound insulation and carpet padding from the rear storage area - creating more space underneath our storage/rear leveling system.

On road performance was top notch. Good road feel, zero wandering. The balance was also spot on (and the installers did not mention any issues in getting the tires balanced).

Off road is where the tires really stood out from the ATIIs. In more than one situation in which we previously pulled the lever into 4WD HI, we kept the truck in 2WD. Driving the North Fork of the Swan River outside of Breckenridge created the most challenge. However, in conditions we experienced in the past, this time around we got much further into the drive with just the rear wheels pushing us along than we ever got with the ATIIs. Once the front wheels were engaged, we had zero problems going up extremely steep, rocky, and muddy terrain that the ATIIs always had issues biting into. Unfortunately, we had to bail when we got to the gnarliest section...which might be a good thing: we both thought that a stock rig might be able to make it up the rest of the trail, but a slightly lifted rig would have a much easier time. (any recommendations on a 2"-2.5" lift that doesn't kill on road performance??).

Ultimately, we are pretty stoked by the off road performance of the ATIIIs. The tires are so far a perfect match for our driving requirements, and I look forward to taking them out in the mountains this winter.

I’m in a tire dilemma with these. I deal with the same tire place and know the owner. So I prefer to give him the business. He gave me a 285 mounted on my SCS wheels since I lifted my 2020 Pro higher. He called me yesterday and cannot get these from any of the vendors. All out of this size. I told him I can wait till they he can get them. So was planning on getting them but also looking at the Nitto ridge grappler option he can get. But do not like the reviews for the snow on that tire. So I a decision to make.

Sounds like tire shop needs a new supplier. Regardless you could order them online and bring them to the shop but personally I would find a discount tire as they will give you road hazard and lifetime roadforce balance...and my DT pricematched anyone on the net

I'll be buying at end of November hopefully some Black Friday deals. If these aren't available I have no idea what I will buy. Probably won't do KO2's again. I don't see too many people recommend Hankooks here, anyone run those?

I’m ok with it ForRun. I don’t have a discount tire near me. Plus it cheaper to buy from him and they come with the life time rotation and balance. Even on corvette forum guys with the Michelin’s tires are having a hard time getting them for there C7’s. Because of all this COVID causing production delays. I would go with the Ridge Grapplers just don’t like the reviews in the snow.
