Exhaust?

So last week I put the 4 Runner in a bind doing a bit of off roading . Got stuck in a a ditch that I was crossing and ended up pushing in the exhaust.

The exhaust pipe is nice bent where it goes over the axle.

Now it sounds like a really bad stereo with too much bass!

Went to a couple of local shops and apparently the exhaust is made of unobtanium. Pretty darn expensive just to replace the bent piece and re-install the tip. ($440 was the lowest estimate)

Looking at aftermarket cat-back options like the Borla. Not sure that I want the extra noise from their system. I tried to call Battle Born about heir group buy, I was going to inquire about the Borla "Touring" system.

Anyone have suggestions/thoughts/other possibilities before I commit?

Thanks!

I crunched my exhaust tip on a boulder a while back, haven't bothered to get it replaced yet. I cut off the crumpled tip, and the exhaust ended up melting part of my bumper. I didn't see that coming.

I'm looking at replacement options too, but haven't been too bothered.

Whatever you go with, get a side exit so you can use the rear window down while driving!
Most aftermarket cat-back are just fine as long as you're cruising, it's only under acceleration that they get more aggressive. That is unless you add URD's Y-pipe which changes everything!

Mine is definitely not a crumpled tip, rather I bent the pipe rather significantly, where it curves up and over the rear axle.

I would be concerned the side exit would be far more prone to getting banged on rocks etc. For example; dropping off a ledge with the rear tire.

I did pretty much what you did except ran a tree stump along the bottom so it messed it up. So, I went looking to replace. Factory is expensive so I tried Gibson-like the look and sound and got improved MPG's but my issues came with no matter how hard I tried it kept coming loose and vibrating on the cross member. Drone wasn't bad and sounds pretty good when you open it up. After I got tired of that I got a Borla S, it was the only option for the Pro at the time. Very easy to install and no issues with fitment or connections. Once it got broken in I found the sweet (not) drone and it kept getting louder to the point I couldn't stand it. Well I started to search again and found out that the Borla Touring fits the Pro's now. Ordered it up and it is noticeably quieter than the S. Still some drone but very toned down. Many lessons have been learned with this and I probably should've just spent the money on a factory system and called it a day.

The BBO Group Buy is for the S-Type exhaust which many have said has a loud drone and is very loud. The Borla Touring is much tamer and quieter, with a nice tone and no drone at all, I highly recommend it

A quick heads-up on the Borla Touring. I towed a drift boat (very light weight w/no motor) from Denver to Montana for a fly fishing trip, about 8 hours each way. The Borla was about 6 months old at the time and was sounding great. No issues at all. Less than half way to MT it started getting louder, and louder. By the time we got there it was crazy loud, especially on up-hills. The entire drive home was almost unbearable due to the noise. I took it to Exhaust Pros to get looked at and they said the "packing" inside was completely burnt out of the Borla. They said it was due to the V6 running much hotter than a V8, especially while towing, even something as light weight as a drift boat. I ended up going Gibson and haven't had any issues since. Not sure if you'll be towing anything, or if others have had similar issues, but that was my experience with the Borla Touring.....

I thought Borla had a million mile warranty. Did they provide a new touring exhaust?

Had to look up unontainium...

In fiction, engineering, and thought experiments, unobtainium is any hypothetical, fictional, extremely rare, costly, or impossible material. Less commonly, it can refer to a device with desirable engineering properties for an application, but which are difficult or impossible to achieve. Wikipedia

Not to hijack this, but is there an issue with the straight rear exhaust entering the open rear window while driving? I have a new PRO with side exhaust and don't have an issue. But I'm looking to change it due to the drone/noise under load.

I have the straight rear exhaust, and I roll the back window down all the time. Never had an issue with fumes, can't say that I have noticed it even once. Maybe my dog has a different opinion though.

Yes, essentially it is taking the world unobtainable and turning it into a fake "element" by adding the ium to it.

Its really weird that a run of the mill muffler shop couldn't weld an extension and a downward bend in 45 mins??? Hell, even some AdvancedAuto tip would have done the trick probably. The side exit definitely seems MORE prone to crunching as its in line with the tire!! One big rock or ledge and Id think itd be all over (again).

On HARD acceleration the vacuum formed by the aerodynamics (or lack thereof) does tend to pull sulfur fuel fumes back into the vehicle with the rear window down. Side WOULD help but again seems to impede offroad capabilities.

+1 on the Borla Touring. Nice noise when accelerating, no drone and butt dyno says a bit better power.
