Looking for Kayak Carrier Recommendations

I've got an Artec industries roof rack..the cross rails are fairly wide. Looking for recommendations on a good universal kayak mount that I can put up there.

Thanks.

Before I had anything fancy, I just strapped em down to the factory rails and cross bars. Now we use Yakima Jay-lows.

I can't remember the model but I have Malone J hooks that fold flat. They are great.

Was initially considering strapping them down..seems like the simplest solution, but I started looking at those jay-lows..couldn't figure out whether they would work with these cross bars and artec has not been responsive..

We did a 6hr trip with them just strapped to the OE cross bars before getting the J Lows. Both strapped to the rails, not each other.

yeah, I figured the crossbars wouldn't have any trouble..just trying to find something that would make it easier..

Depends on what kind of kayak? Sea kayak, recreational, whitewater? The shape of hull or the deck would determine what you need. i.e Kayak stackers, J bars, or rollers.

I bet the Thule big mouth clamps would fit over those.

I put my Thule crossbars from my E46 wagon on mine last summer. Problem is with about 3" of lift and a fairly heavy tandem kayak it's tough to get it on-off. If I had one of those setups that swung down over the side it would be WAY better. But they are really expensive for the 2-3 times a season I seem to get out these days. Was way easier when I had single boats and a tacoma.

Thanks, I'll take a look at those.

I'm just looking at a basic recreational sit on top kayak..something to use in the creeks and river around my house, maybe a little fishing..nothing fancy.

If you are just strapping on a basic rec. kayak then get whatever rack your wallet allows you to. Don't worry about the kayak as it'll strap on OEM rack or any Thule/ yakima rack you add. It'll even strap up on any of those expensive full rack.

NVM. Can’t get pics to load.
Put the rear window down and shove it in the back.

I went with the Thule Hullavator. Not the kinda guy to shove a 12ft kayak out the back window just not how I do things.
