4.88 285/70/R17 RPM at 70 mph

Well I guess Jason saved up some old 4Runner videos. In this video at 17:56 he is getting 2500 RPM at 70 mph. Seems reasonable. I think my RPM with 3.73 is around 1800? I'll have to check it again. He does say in another vehicle the crawl off-road is much better. Just wish the 4Runner came stock with 4.88 and 6 gears.

4.88 is overkill on a 4Runner unless heavy and running 35's. Heck even 4.56 is over geared but it's the next best option for those running anything over a 33" tire. I think 4.10 to 4.30 and a 6th gear would have been ideal for a 32-33" tire and what it should come with stock.

My rig is loaded down fairly heavily and I run 4.88's with 285/70's and have no complaints. My around town mileage improved around 1.5 MPG and freeway stayed about the same - I can average 17MPG if I keep it below 70. Once you pass 70MPH the mileage decreases exponentially.

Offroad the 4runner is a different animal with the 4.88's. Everything is improved across the spectrum. I was initially set on 4.56's but the shop convinced me to go for the 4.88's and I am very glad I did so.

Put it in 4th gear and see if you like it. It's basically equal to 4.88's in 5th. Mathematically it would be identical to 4.97:1 diff gears in 5th gear.
