2016 4runner rust

Hi everyone, first post here. Looking for some thoughts on if this 2016 4runner TRD Pro with 82k miles is one I should pass on or pull the trigger.. Seems to be in great shape on the inside, well taken care of but the vehicle spent most of its life in PA up to this point. I had the dealer take a few pictures of the underside to help me decide if I want to make the trip a few hours out to pick it up.

My questions to you:
Is this an acceptable and treatable amount of rust?
Is $34k just too much for a vehicle with this much rust?
Is there any specific areas I should check for rust on 5th gens?
What would you do in my position?

Looks fine. That's all surface rust. I lived in Utah for 3 years and my 2016 looks pretty similar. Maybe get the dealership to wire wheel it, rust convert, and paint over the areas. Either way it looks fine and I wouldn't hesitate on it if that's the vehicle you want.

Yup that's all good. You could take care of that yourself on a Saturday morning if it bothers you.

Is $34k just too much for his vehicle. A new 2020 can be had for under $40,000.

2016 4runner rust

Ok a new 2020, but what about a 2020 Pro?

I paid 30k for any 2016 trail with 50k.

If I were you I wouldn’t buy a pro unless you were in love with the color. I would be changing out the entire suspension so it wouldn’t be worth it to me

You've obviously never seen rust! What you show could happen to a new vehicle after being test driven in rain a few times.

I have a 2016 sr5 . being in the cold northeast rust belt that is normal surface rust. weld rust is why I do the rust work every fall ...I use cold galv paint then top it off with rustoleum high performance black paint.

today the rust is not a problem for me because IF i SEE a tiny rust blister I do the job.. looks better than new when I bought it in july 2016.
I payed $35K dealer cost ............pro is a bit more $$$........

Thanks everyone for the info and advice! I'm going to go look at and test drive it this week to make sure everything works. I want the pro mostly because I plan to keep it stock the whole time I own it.

When you go to negotiate play up the rust issue and that you're really worried about it. That may give you a little more room to haggle the price or like I mentioned above maybe you can get them to do a rust treatment for free. Good luck!!!

Prices and incentives on new vehicles are going to plummet in the weeks ahead. I’d hold off for a bit and look for a new 19 or 20 OffRoad. You can then build up suspension etc. to your liking for not that much and have a superb vehicle. The biggest advantage is you’ll have a “0” miles with full warranty to start with, not one with 80K+ miles on it! Another question to ask and answer of yourself, in Missouri how much are you really going to need and use the 4x4 capability of a
Pro?

Good point general on the incentives, I'll have to think on that one.

I personally really like the aesthetic of the Pro, especially in quicksand, and I plan to keep it stock instead of sinking money into it aftermarket.

80k miles is definitely not ideal but we all know these are built to go 300+

Apparently the dynamics of recent economic devastation and the uncertainty of what’s unfolding from the virus pandemic haven’t reached your location yet.
Whatever you do, I’d recommend you be very pragmatic in your decision making.
Best of luck and wishes.
