Borla Exhaust Intall (with comparison to stock video)
Busy install weekend:
Though the addition of a new exhaust system has little to no performance benefit and can potentially make the vehicle sound worse by way of highlighting the lack of 8 cylinders, my current exhaust has almost rusted through and I was able to get the Borla system at Autoanyting for basically nothing because Black Friday and some credit I had there. I decided to go with Borla because most of the commentary on the system indicated "just enough growl to notice." My vehicle is my family vehicle, so I wanted just enough testosterone to catch the ear but not so much that it was disruptive and certainly not enough to hear the tinny whine of a V6. Explanting the old system was mildly challenging, requiring a sawzall to correct the lack of identifiable bolts by the rear flange. Installing the new system was slick and easy. Directions that come with the part are good.
Here is the youtube to link to a comparison video I made between the stock and Borla on my 2013 4runner trail. The first clip is obviously outside of the vehicle, the rest are in the cab.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP78oRrFa5o
Below are some picks of the install. **Not responsible if you damage your car. Tips:
1) If you live in the midwest, be ready to saw that old exhaust, it is very tough to get off otherwise. I used the sawzall at the bolt flange at the rear of the stock exhaust.
2) Drop the spare tire down while you do the install, it gives you infinitely more room to get the old system out and put the new system in.
3) Use rust penetrant on the bolts that look salvageable. Remember you likely have to keep (and shouldn't saw) the bolts in the front flange (they are spring loaded).
4) If there is a lot of corrosion you may have to thoroughly lubricate or even cut the metal on the stock exhaust side to get the hangers out of the rubber grommets underneath the vehicle.
5) This is not a tough install. If your vehicle isn't rusted through it is 4 bolts to get the old system off, three to get the new one on. If you use the saw you only need to get two bolts off, but you may need an antacid right when you begin chopping your car.
*** Love the Borla System. No regrets, at least not for $350 and 1.5 hours worth of labor. Enjoy!!!!

Thanks for the video. The stock exhaust sounds louder than I remember it to be. Then again, I put on my exhaust just a couple of days after I bought the truck so I really don't remember how quiet or loud the stock exhaust was. I was debating on going back to the stock exhaust to quiet it down a little. I could've sworn the Borla was quieter when I installed it (maybe it "broke in"). But after watching the video, I'm not sure I wanna go back to stock anymore. How accurate would you say the audio was in picking up the exhaust sounds in the video?

Did you have any problems with the tip hitting your bumper? I remember when I installed mine, it was resting on the bumper. It was an easy fix though by swapping exhaust hangers.

Yes, it hit my TE trim. I ended up stuffing a rubber spacer in the rearmost rubber hangar (triangular shaped).

Finally!
Thanks for going through the effort to make a vid, MNT4R!
I'll have to listen to this on decent speakers when I get home.

Thanks. I took the vid with an iPad, so it is somewhat limited, but done at the same distance in the same spot in my driveway for direct comparison and to limit variables. Everything else was in the cab. I love the sound. It is not intrusive, but it is a good growl.

Didn't hit, but I am finding every 4R is different. Nice tip about the hangers.

I've been running the Borla for 3 years now on my 14TE. IMO, best set-up I've had. Previous 05 4Runner with TRD CAT and Droned.............
I plan on putting the Borla on TRD Pro once it arrives..........................

That's how mine looked too, had to cut in the same area aswell to get the rear section out. Mine came from San Diego

I live in SE Minnesota, so the underbody of the car gets a salt bath 5 months out of the year when they are salting the roads for snow and ice. Believe it or not my truck only has 40k miles on it....

I am glad to see that mine isn't the only one with that much rust on that rear flange. I cut and drilled out the bolts.

I just bought this cat back system for my wife's (that's what I tell her lol) 17 TRD PRO and I just want to confirm that I just need to slightly bend down the last exhaust hangers to make it clear the rear bumper. I know all models are the same however on the borla site it specifically says it will not fit the pro and has me questioning if it will fit or not. Why do they specifically exclude the pro?
