Those with a 3rd row...do you use it?
Hey folks,
Like the subject says, I am curious if you guys and gals who got a 3rd row actually use it or not. We got a 3rd row in our SR5P and have yet to use it in 3 years. Our kids are young (3 & 5), so maybe in the future we will but who knows.

I have a 3rd and I use once a year or so. I bought it for that reason. I had a deposit on a cement trd pro but cancelled because having the 3rd would be most useful. I am still glad I have the option for it even though I don’t use it a ton. I figured an sr5 is more than capable off roading for what I would probably do with it. Now if I get a trd pro with a third row I probably would have bought it.

Same here. If I had the option to get the third row with all the offroad goodies that come with the OR, ORP, and Pro that would've been ideal. At least a stock rear locker to make me feel cooler...? But sadly I'll use the third row more than all that stuff. At 3 and 5 yours are still in bulky car seats and probably can't climb in yet without help? The kiddos here are 16 and 9. The younger one thinks its awesome to be back in "her own row". It's not a daily use third row but it's not bad either. We get a fair amount of out-of-town family visitors and it comes in handy carting everybody around in one car.

We have used it exactly three times in two years, for less than an hour. Each time we could have just taken 2 vehicles.

It's never been designed as a vehicle that should be used with a third row, but they put one in there anyway.

Our 12 had the 3rd row. It was nearly worthless. Maybe fit one adult for a small trip.
When we sold the 12 and bought a 20, we had no desire for a 3rd row again, and we searched to find one without.
When we need additional seating, our Land Cruiser does a much better job (3rd row still not ideal for long trips for any but kids).

We use ours regularly. Our kids are 13-11-6. They can all use it but the 11 yo and the 6yo love it when traveling. We will take the minivan on a lot of trips but we also camp and tow a nice pop up. We normally roll with one seat used and one down for storage of a cooler and extras. Works out perfectly. Beach trips with the windows down and rear open is comfortable for them as well. No room behind the seats hurts but we make it work just fine for our needs.

We had 3rd row seating in our '15 and used it maybe 10 times before we sold that rig in December. Purposely replaced it with a new 'runner without 3rd row seating since the roughly 4" of cargo height space and flip forward rear seats we use often.

In my super sized SUV the back seat is taking up space in a spare room of the house, like it has for about 18y 11.5m of 19 years of ownership. With zero footwell it was very uncomfortable for extended use even by kids. The empty space is far more useful.

We have a 2019 4Runner with two rows of seats and a 2015 Honda Pilot with three rows. The third row of the Pilot has been used exactly one time in nearly six years of ownership.
Third row seats stay folded down and we use the extra cargo area instead of extra seating. Kids want to spread out and have their own seat... too bad, I’m not moving the cargo mat!

My 2018 Limited was a 5 seater, perfect.
Had it written off after hitting a deer.
Replacement is a 2020 Limited 7 passenger.
I really dislike the 3rd. row, cut down on storage.
I have never raised them up and probably never will.

I got a third row because I have 1 and 4 year olds, and knew nobody can fit in the little space in between their car seats. Both sets of grandparents are from out of town, and I thought it would be nice to be able to take one vehicle to places.
I’ve had my 4Runner for a year, and I’ve used the third row three times. Two of them it would have been way easier taking two cars. Maybe in the future when I don’t have two huge car seats and the kids want to ride in the back it’ll get used. It’s a nice option to have, but the extra cargo room would have been more useful to date.

I hated my 3rd row seats until I removed them and made a storage area where the seats were. My 3rd seat removed storage pictures It is the best mod I made.
Remember also that when the 3rd row seats are up there is very little room between the seat and the lift hatch so if you are picking up people at the airport with luggage there will be no place to put it.

OK, ill go the other way.
i used mine maybe once a month these days. when i bought my '14 new, i used it maybe 2-3 times a month as we usually have a cousin or friend coming along with my own two kids. Add to that my youngest used to love riding back there per his preference. he would consider it his own row. on road trips especially, one kid in the 2nd row, one in the 3rd, and everybody was happy. since my son is now my size, 5-8, he rides back there less, but still, its not meant to be a perm 3rd row like say a Sequoia is. I say to myself, if we did have a 3rd/4th kid, then that's what we would have purchased. But knowing with our two, we would occasionally be needing that extra set of seats multiple times a year, then the 3rd row was a solid choice for when its needed for this mild-off roading dad.
I'd rather have it and only need it here and there, then to not have it and have ppl all squished up behind me.
If i were to ever upgrade, it would be a 200 series LC, with its third row...so there

We have a 9 & 7 year old and probably use our 3rd row about a dozen times a year or so, mostly for when we have kids friends/cousins or the grandparents. It's nice to have and the kids don't complain when they're back there.
