Paddle shifters on 2020 and maybe earlier?

Crazy question, but I'm afraid I have been going crazy.

Do some 2020 4Runners, even down to the base SR5, have paddle shifters? And maybe even older ones?

During my test drive of one of the 2020 4Runners on the dealer's lot, I could have sworn that there were paddle shifters. As far as I could tell, it was as base of an SR5 as could be.

When my 4Runner arrived from elsewhere in the state to my dealer, I took it for a test drive, too. I was a little surprised by the lack of paddle shifters, but I wasn't sad. I don't want paddle shifters anyway They're annoying in my dad's Grand Cherokee.

But now I'm weirded out. I could have sworn that the first 4Runner I test drove had paddle shifters. Is it possible?

I want paddles so I can downshift when offroad without having to take my hands off of the wheel.

Paddles are for dual clutch transmissions. No idea why they would put them on a generic automatic, but here we are.

Just to avoid misinformation, paddle shifters are not only for dual clutch transmission (DCT). Many automatic transmission vehicles have paddle shifters these days. For example, look at the Lexus lineup (staying close to the Toyota family) the majority of models have paddle shifters and none are DCT.

This post is just meant to avoid any misinformation. I appreciate all of the info I read on forums but sometimes there is wrong information.

No, I stand by my post. If it's not a dual clutch, paddle shifters are a dumb gimmick and you should feel bad for using them.

I completely agree. The transmission ECU is specifically tuned to take advantage of the paddles. I believe Lexus has the fastest shifting true auto out there. Aisin built auto tranny.

Well I own a Lexus ISF with paddle shifters (not DCT) and I can guarantee there is a difference using the paddles rather than keeping it in auto. I don't feel bad and I will never feel bad for using them. My previous post was just a clarification to anyone reading this thread who is not familiar with paddle shifters. We were all there at one point and this should be a learning platform to share true and helpful information. Feel free to hold your own opinion.
