I donít think the cost is worth it. Factory amp isnít great and itís over $400 from the dealer. Taco tunes have plug and play harnesses for adding an amp and look super easy to do

Alpine | PSU-300FRN

Not looking for big thumping, just filling the lows.

Factory JBL sub enclosure help

Save your money.

Can get the same thing from alpine for like $299 from Best Buy. Not sure what the extra $500 is for.

Plug and play through taco tunes is $35. No possible way thatís worth $500 even if the bracket was made of titanium

Use the to buy a set of focal fronts and another amp to run those and youíll be way happier

If you run the factory enclosure, buy the JL or Rockford 8". The enclosure volume was something like .43ft3. Minus sub displacement, looking at .39-.4ft3. I had modeled a few different 8" subs in winisd and the JL and RF modeled the best. Pump 250w rms to these and call it a day.

You may not even need a t-harness that tacotunes sells. If your amp takes high level inputs, just tap the front speaker wires, and ignition signal, run those to amp. Power and ground and call it a day. These are subs, not much to it.

A stealth option, adds a sub, amplifies other speakers and it's tuned for the vehicle.

After doing some research and reading several related threads, I decided to ditch the OEM JBL sub and replace it with a JL8W3. My overall concern was would the sub fit behind the factory JBL panel. I recently blew a dash speaker and already had an Alpine headunit so I decided to replace all the speakers and use a previous 5 channel amp and Audio EQS EQ to do the upgrade. The end result was much much better than the OEM JBL system. For the JL sub, it is pretty much unreal.

I have a background in car audio and have been around the sub block a time our two. My last 4Runner had a JL10W3. The JL8W3 in the OEM enclosure can carry every bit of sound my 10W3 could. It is not just a night and day change, it is a stratosphere above what the OEM sub was. If your vehicle can accommodate the $180 OEM enclosure and you want near over the top sound it is well worth the upgrade. Everything tucked behind the factory panel with room to spare. The 8W3 is powered by an Alpine PDR-V75 5 channel amp with the 5th channel rated at 250 going to the sub. I added the optional sub volume control knob to the center console which is a must if you are adding this sub.

Sounds like the route I plan on going.

Question: will the factory enclosure fit a standard SR5 WITHOUT 3rd row? I've only seen it retrofitted in a 3rd row model.

Yep. But you gonna have to make some kind of panel to cover the void left from removing the pocket. I do have 3rd row rear panel envy.
@gordy

Good job on the factory upgrade. The 8w3 is good for what it is. I've been looking for more output though, and looks like the new sundown sd4-8 with it's neo motor looks like it should fit

I was just comparing the SD4 in 8". It has about 1mm LESS depth than the JL. So it should work. I prefer the inverted surround on the SD4 as well. Helps with front clearance imho.

Yep, definitely a different rear trim panel
