5th gen and XREAS system

So I have a 2012 5th gen limited and in 2015 my XREAS system started to leak, my dealer told me I needed to replace the whole system and seeing as I had an extended warranty I told them to go ahead and replace the whole system.
I took my car in for its 80000 service and the technician told me my XREAS system was leaking again (Just after my extended warranty expired) I am not spending $3000 on a new system and I am deciding to take the whole system off and replacing with regular suspension.
Has anyone else done this and how much should I be looking at to replace the system with conventional shocks?

Many have, including me. Removing is no biggie but the replacement cost depends of which you choose.

Philly, which way did you go? My car does not see extreme off roads, mainly graded trails.

My X-REAS failed on my 03 Limited at 138,000 km (or 85,750 miles). There was a leak in the system - in the line behind the Driver’s Side Centre Control Absorber. Leak was likely caused by corrosion of the line due to road salt used up here during our Canadian winters.

Fluid that had dripped onto the driveway was the first indicator of some sort of problem. As more fluid leaked out of the system, the suspension became worse.

I removed the entire X-REAS system (too costly to replace), and installed the standard SR5 suspension (to keep it relatively stock).

In hindsight, I might have sourced a quality aftermarket shock that was less expensive than the OEM Toyota shocks - but I did not have the luxury of having time to "shock shop" due to the nature of the X-REAS system failure.

These links/threads might help:

Toyota 4-Runner X-REAS Shocks - Shockwarehouse.com

Best Replacement Shocks when removing the XREAS?

Replacing XREAS with regular shocks

5th Gen Limited X-REAS Leak - Options?

At least now I'll be better prepared if/when my X-REAS goes on my 2011 Limited.

I was just in the same situation with my 2013 Limited. I replaced it with the FJ TRD Suspension Kit which Toyota is/was clearing for around $573. Read the linked thread, but be quick as there are not that many kits left. It's a bolt on kit for the Limiteds. I'm quite happy with the results.

That's a hell of a price. I almost wish my XREAS was going out again, but it was just replaced under warranty less than 2k miles ago.

I replaced mine with Dobinsons shocks. It's much firmer now, in a good way, as the XREAS was not doing anything and I was hitting the bump stops over big bumps.

It also helped to level out the front/rear. Although I still had to add a spacer to the front to get it just right.

Check my and other build threads. For your use take a look at something like bilsteins which should serve you well.

I have an almost new XREAS suspension for sale. I had them replaced under warranty and installed aftermarket after a year. Let me know and we can work something out.

Ditched XREAS on my 2012 for the Toytec ultimate. I was hesitant to pull it out, but I'm glad I did. If I remember right, it was around $1,500 for the suspension and SPI UCAs. Cheaper if you don't need the adjustable fronts.

The Xreas system is notorious for leaking.
Do yourself a favour ,just replace it with bilsteins 5100 or 6120/5160.

I must have forgot about this post.......Anyway my dealership said they would take off the old XREAS system and put on regular shocks and the only charge to me was to pay for the alignment. I thought that was a good deal, car is a little more bouncy now but I didn't have to pay $3000 to get it back on the road.

im replacing the xreas system in the wifes 14 limited with Bil 6112s up front and 5100s plus a spacer lift in the back. Not looking or a massive lift as we just recently had a little girl, but the wife would like a bit more clearance, so im having it dialled in for a 2" lift to be level.

Smile Replaced X-REAS System

Replaced the X-Reas system on my '03 Ltd last summer. Removal wasn't bad as the system was almost empty, had no gas pressure and little fluid!!
I installed FJ springs all around, bought new for $390.00, installed Bilstein 4600's all around for about $300.00.
The LCA alignment cams were all seized too so replaced LCA's, one with used fro about $90.00 and a new one from 1A Auto, for about $75.00. Getting old ones off was a REAL bear!!
So far so good, like the results.

I recently replaced my xreas on my 2011 Limited

I love the setup minus the shitty Icon rear springs.
