I've always liked the 4runner going back to the late 90's and seeing 3rd gens as a kid. It's a good looking, simple and rugged old school vehicle and i'm glad the 2020 added a few modern touches (woulda liked even more but you take what you can get). The strong resale was a big plus if I ever decide to get into something else. With a growing family and a house, it's also fairly practical. So perhaps not 1 single reason but a combination of reasons.

If i ever get rid of it, it'll probably be for an all-electric vehicle like a Tesla. If i were in the market today, I'd probably go for a Model Y performance as a daily driver and pick up an early 5th gen Trail as a 2nd vehicle.

I went with the 4R after having death wobble with my Rubicon. I knew I was going to have negative equity so I thought the 4R would be the best choice to absorb some of that negative equity. I bought the Pro because I was tired of modifying vehicles. I still have the itch to modify, but at this point with the virus I can barely pay for this vehicle as it is. I plan on selling in two or three years and hopefully will be at even equity or better. The pandemic has really put into perspective my needs. The problem is my wants have always gotten the better of me.

True, I am sure the tires will get replaced long before they reach the end of their life. That's a pretty easy upgrade to justify. I'll hold off on lifts, roof racks, bumpers, and other body mods until I find myself being held back with the stock configuration.

I love my 5th gen 4R, but they are overly complex. I know many people complain about not having the latest/greatest doodads in the 5th gen, but it's still an honest SUV at it's core.
Agreed. Got in mine because other than the Wrangler which can "technically" be ordered stripped down, the 4runner was about the most analog option around at the time.

My approach is more about "hardening" and making things a little more ruggedized, whether it's skid plates, better crossbars (LFD), or adding a transmission cooler to lower fluid temps. Bumpers, suspension and intake/exhaust mods just aren't on my list any longer.

A Magnuson SC sure sounds nice to me, though.

It has "Party Mode", which was my number one requirement.

I traded in my 2012 Raptor for an Audi S3 a year or so ago when I moved from AZ to CO. Quickly realized I needed something to get me in to the mountains here in CO, for camping and off-road trips. Looked at a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, but did not like the suspension set up on them. Looked at a JL Wrangler, but ultimately did not want to go with another American off road vehicle and did not want to daily drive a JL. The 4runner fit all my needs for the trails here in CO as well as being a daily. Went with a 2020 Black ORP, the wife is now driving the S3. Just purchased the 6112/5160 setup with Dobinson coils in the rear. Can't wait to get it put on!

I have had a lot of Toyota’s. Traded my 17 Pro in for my 2020 Pro. Been driving tacomas or 4runners for along time. No need to look at anything else. I love how crazy the value is when it’s time to sell or trade in. Plus the reliability!!

My 2014 Infiniti Q50S Hybrid hit 100k miles and I was torn what to do. I didn't want to trade it in when the new ones are basically the same as my '14, so I decided to get a second vehicle. Always loved Toyotas, especially the 4Runner and know people that have 250k+ miles on theirs. Plus I needed a sand dune toy ;)

Finding one with only 82k miles was a done deal for me.

my photography equipment wouldn't fit into anything smaller, and I am too cheap to buy something unreliable.

I looked at the old 3rd gen for 22 years as it mostly sat collecting dust between infrequent use. I decided it was time to look at a 5th gen which is now doing the same job. Almost at 700 miles in 9 months.
