I happen to like the new features on the 2020. The adaptive cruise control has worked nicely for me, however the lane keeping can be annoying so it’s toggled off. The camera doesn’t bother me at all, I hope to never have to use it in case of a collision but it’s there just in case.
Face it we are in an era were everything we do is recorded and it’s not going away. I’m not fond of this but I have no choice unless I want to live on a remote island in the Pacific.

Did you get Toyota app that lets you start the car remotely and shows tire pressures and stuff? It also logs your driving habits and gives driving score based on it. Information is sent to Toyota (they claim it is not shared) for R&D. If you are on the fence about big brother opt out, disable and delete the app on the phone.

This is new for the 2020. I did not install their app and wont. I understand I cannot avoid everything when it comes to privacy, that's impossible. But I refuse to have a computer apply the brakes for me and I never used cruise control for the 25 years I have been driving. I still enjoy my 4runner and cant wait to do some mild mod's to it.

Way too late to get upset about computers controlling your car.

I'm a pretty big privacy guy, but I can't get too worked up about a camera that's part of the TSS system. The suburu system is entirely camera-based, IIRC.

This isn't a case of some nefarious intent and people in the shadows watching your every move and giving that info to the government. It's designed to help pick up the lines on the road so that the lane departure system works and its designed to help identify people and animals as part of the pedestrian detection system.

I've been driving 45 years.
Last year was the first I drove a vehicle with those "safety" systems.
Last year was also the first time I was involved in an accident. Two of them. Major accidents. (I was not at fault in either case).
Both were in my work truck, an 18-wheeler.
So collision avoidance & lane departure are crutches for those that maybe shouldn't be driving.

People are driving distracted more, you should know that more than anyone since you can look into every car that passes you.

I'd like to see concrete data if collision avoidance and LDW/LKA systems are having any effect on serious accidents when more of them are in the wild.

The LKA I tried out on a Ford Escape rental made the car bounce between lane markers like a billiard ball and decided to slingshot itself out of the lane when cornering on highways.

Ah, so you’re that guy on the highway that never maintains the same speed when we all know your 2020 has cruise control. Makes sense now. Ill never understand people that think someone is out to get them because cars don’t have carburetors and an ignition I can start with a screw driver anymore. If big brother wants to stalk you we have plenty of better ways and systems to do it. Your phone you constantly carry around with multiple cameras and a microphone is one of them.

The cameras are for CYA. Toyota and everyone is looking to put the blame on someone else. Google, Apple and especially Amazon know more about you than the IRS. The data that they collect on you is worth money.

People get dumber everyday and the technology encourages them to do that. My wife worked at Stanford where the "smartest kids in the world" went to school. However, a few of them get collect by cars ever year because they will ride their bike across the campus with no hands while texting. I just don't want to be the collector - so I have my own dash cam for my own CYA.

Personally I hate the nanny stuff. I actually find it distracting when the car starts yelling at me that I'm not in my lane.

Possibly the worst distraction in modern cars is the friggin touch screen. Unlike real buttons and knobs that you can feel and touch without looking, a touch screen requires your vision to operate correctly.

Stay safe and put down your phone.
