With all the weight I carry I was finding the 701’s a little soft. The 899’s were great but I missed the down travel variable coils gave me. Attempted to mediate this with some poly spacers, but ended up going 749v when they came out and love them. I have a hybrid extended travel shock with 2” bump stop extensions and rarely bottom out.

I still prefer the predictability of a linear coil like the OME for on-road, but off-road you cant beat the travel of a variable rate.

The Dobinsons will ride tall when unloaded, where as a linear coil will just ride firmer (little tall, but within range). What this means is you may need to look at other components depending on your specific setup, like rear control arms to correct your pinion angle, longer sway bar links, etc, depending on typical ride height.

I admittedly went pretty tall with my build, probably running the 749v’s on the lighter side, but when loaded up for a trip it’s nice and level, which is how I like it.

For what it’s worth, I sold my 899’s to a buddy with no rear bumper, just a drawer system and fridge, and he doesn’t think they’re too stiff. Your results may vary.

This is a great set of examples. Thanks for providing it.

My experiences with the Dobinson's variable rate coils (677v & 701v) is very similar to yours although I've never run the OME's. The Dobinson's coils do stand a bit tall unloaded but not negatively so.

The dobinson 749v how much lift are you??? I'm looking to replace my 3" icon Overland springs. As even now I just have a hitch tire carrier and it's already sagging w/ my 3rd row... I would like to maintain a 3" which is level with my 4.5" in the front

I'm still running the Icon Overland 3'' springs with a 15mm Dobinson's spacer on top of the Icon springs. Currently I have about .75'' of rake when unloaded.....but it decreases quick when loaded down, and I want to maintain about a 1'' rake when fully loaded.

I currently have the 701V's and the OME 899's in the garage that have never been installed.

I've been thinking about going straight to the 749V's, or maybe trying the OME 899's w/ the same 15mm spacers, if needed, to get the height I want in the rear.....Interested to see what you end up doing, as well as any further info from @JSparky ..

I weight my 4runner without new front skids tire carrier w/ the stuff on it and pumpkin skid. I was 5660lbs

So currently I have just a tire carrier (80lbs) w/ a 35" spare( 86lbs), a hi lift, traction boards, and a 3rd row... I'm going to go tomorrow to weight again at the truck scale.

And as of right now... my 4runner has a small squatted stance. And I have 3" Overland springs. I'm afraid that with the rear bumper comes it'll squat even more. This will be furtherly worsen by having 6 passengers and all our camping gear.

I think the 749v would be too stiff for that weight. I have about 425# over stock behind my rear axle and run the 701v and it's just a bit too stiff, about 3.25". I have some drawers on the way that should correct it. It rides fine just too tall for what I want. Loaded up it's fantastic.

I can get back to you later today, I’m honestly not sure.

Anyone know of a free vehicle scale in the Bay Area?

Just measured, from the asphalt to the bottom of the rear fender flare I’m at 41.5” and 41.75”, respectively. That’s with 315/70r17’s (saw you have the same tire size). I can measure from the center of the hub when I can get an extra pair of hands.

That’s unloaded, which for me means rear bumper plus full size spare, Autohome Columbus rtt, empty fridge and full tool box.

I’ll have to update my build thread with current stats.

just an update ...

6240lbs was perfect with the 749V but as soon as I load it with my family of 6 ... we're at 7100 to 7200lbs; 749V still good.

but with full camping gear for 5 days ... I'm at 7960lbs and 749V isnt enough ... so I ended up adding bags.

ended up using Air Lift Kit #60920; which was perfect because theres a 1" gap from the bump stops ( I cut 2 off ) so it doesnt restrict flex even at only 5psi.

Damn dude that's loaded up! I nominate you for most loaded 4Runner! I loaded up pretty heavy but nothing like you.

Yeah cuz of the weight I'm exploring the options of getting a trailer and towing that weight instead of having it on top and in the back.

Yeah I have started to consider the same thing. Although the kids are getting old enough that camping isn't "cool" anymore lol.
