Maybe not the forum for me.... Just got home with my brand new T4R TRD premium. I actually WAITED until 2020 to buy it in anticipation of the safety sense package! Why a 4Runner? 2018 road trip from MA to UT and AZ almost killed my Audi on some of the so-called roads out there. Replaced all the tires and wheel bearings when I got home, but considered myself lucky to make it back.

So, next trip is summer of 2021 and I will not be worrying about surviving the roads and trails out West. But there is a lot of highway between here and there, so why not improve the chances of getting there alive with some electronic safety features? (Also, I'm an EE and have been developing test equipment for safety electronics for the last 10 years, so its really fun to actually be able to have it now.)

And, to directly address the original question: The black rectangle in the grille is the radar. The camera is between the rear view mirror and the windshield.

Does this sensor help very much? I do still believe it's a cool thing anyway. Toyota does not stand still and makes new unusual changes to its cars. This is a very unusual solution to put the sensor in the place where the car number is usually. Perhaps one day this will be the norm. What do you think, if you put the front grill on top, the sensor will stop working? The most logical thing is that yes. This is the main disadvantage, apparently, because the sensor will work only with a special front grill. By the way can you help me with a problem? I'm going to give my wife a new 2018 f150 grill replacement, what do you think is a good option? I've read about it and it says that this part is made of high-quality plastic + there is an LED on the front grill with which the light will be even brighter.

Has anyone installed a behind the grill lightbar on a 2020 with the sensor? Curious to see what that would look like and how the sensor would impede the light output.

Just got a 2020 with safety sense , I have yet to notice its on and it seems to be on in the settings, weird . I don't like all the features anyway after reading up on them. One thing I am wondering if anyone knows is on my wifes car it has a feature where when you put your blinker on if changing lanes and a car is in your blind spot or even close it will beep , does the 4runner have this by any chance ? It also will flash the lights on the mirrors and I have not seen mine do this either . I have a Sr5 premium .

Yeah, for all the complaining some people do, it's really easy to deal with the Toyota Safety Sense stuff. Lane departure alert is easy to turn off and keep off, but there are various sensitivity settings that can help if you really must keep it on. And the collision assist is very unobtrusive. There are sensitivity levels for that, too.

Not in the USA, but I heard there's an option for it in Canada. If you're really desperate and willing to tinker, you might be able to retrofit a Canadian setup. I've never heard of anyone doing that, though.
