Sell the tires you have, and upgrade before you wear the tires out. I just sold my Nittos with 3k miles on them for $150 less than you can buy them brand new for.
If you need the BMC, skip one night of NetFlix and knock it out; no big deal.
The fender liner mod only takes 5 minutes.

Not true. The keyword is maybe on all. I didn't do any of that. Many people don't have to do any modification to get 285's to work. Since the OP is running trail edition rims its even less likely he will have to do anything to get it to work properly.

Having been through cooper 285 tires I am now back to KO2 275s
Off-road and look wise, no doubt 285s help. But for the majority of the drive time (tarmac) it was just too cumbersome for my taste.

I’m getting to the wire here and I’m still undecided. Grrrrr
Thanks for all the responses so far.

I have 285's on my 17 SR5.
1½" spacer on top of OEM struts.
They slightly rubbed the inner fender liner until I moved the liners, about an inch.
Not stock wheels so no idea what offset they are.

Hmm interesting. On a stock rig 275 vs 285 is noticeable. 275's almost drive stock whereas with 285's you definitely feel the sluggishness. However your 4R is definitely not stock and the CBI rear is probably around 225-250lbs. I was running 275's and then I threw on a rear bumper I could feel the extra weight. I went up to 285's after getting the bumper and really didn't notice much difference at all.

I didn’t have to do any of that on my rig and I’m running the larger 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak M/Ts with OEM 17x7 wheels. Supposedly the Falkens run larger than some of the other popular brands in the same size.
4Runners can be all set up different with brands of suspension components, lift height, tire size, tire brand, wheel size and extra weight in accessories.

Running M/Ts with trd offroad wheels (7.5). Only slight rub on mud flap near body mount on full compression. Not sure on the front since i chopped it.

I only had to do minor trimming with my 285's. I think you made a solid choice.

Let's see some pics when you have the 285's on. I have 275's and sold my 265 Nittos immediately after purchasing my Pro. Then I did a 1.5/1" spacer lift to level it out. I'm satisfied with the look and result, plus I had to do zero mods for fitment. No rubbing and clearance issues fully articulated and I like running my front mud flaps. BUT, I will eventually go to 285's once the 275's wear down, as I think the 285-70-17 is the best size (looks/off road performance) tire on the 5th gen without sacrificing too much. Much more selection on 285's, and due to selection, if you blow a 285 out it is easy to find another one no matter where your at. It will also still fit in the spare area underneath.

Any mods. Looks like you still managed to keep your mudflaps. I am in the middle of deciding between 275s/lift with no mods and 285s/lift with potential mods.
