OBD-II change in 2020 - Zero Point Calibration Issue

Did a lift and upgraded UCAs last week on our 2020 ORP.

In the process I tore an ABS wire (I know... I know...) which I've since replaced. The ABS flashing lights cleared, but I was left with an issue with the Pre-Collision warning system nagging me to go to the dealer.

Checked the code, and it is C1290 - Malfunction in Zero Point Calibration. This is related to the centered steering-wheel angle. I can see that being a separate issue based on my first test drive with the UCAs being set slightly differently (and steering angle was off). Again, since corrected, and alignment has been done, but code remains.

Shouldn't be a problem, right? Just do the trick with the DLC-3 (OBD) connector by jumping pins 4 and 12. But it didn't work...

Did a contortionist act, and looked very carefully at the front of the connector. Hmmm, it didn't look like the connector at position 12 was occupied. Pulled the connector off, and my suspicions were confirmed. Looks like on 2020s we get pins 4,5,6,7,14, and 16. So ground (4,5), Can Bus (6,14), K-line (7) and 12v (16). No more TS (or TC) lines.

Looks like this may require TechStream to do a ZPC. Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Anybody know if the TS line might be available someplace else? I'm having a tough time running down the 2020 schematics.

Did you ever resolve this or find a solution? or did you just go to the dealer? I'm tracking something similar in this post Help - PCS malfunction after installation of lift & tires

I have a an appointment setup with a local respectable shop that is willing to try to fix this for me with their scan tools (no charge if they can't fix) because I dread going to the dealer.

Unfortunately I didn't find any solution for the old manual trick of doing a ZPC. It does require electronic programming.

I got an estimate from Toyota dealership - 1 shop hour / $130.
Meanwhile that same dealership had a price for alignment for $85. You'll see why this is relevant based on the information below.

Took it to the shop that had done my alignment after the lift (for $60), and they did the ZPC in about 6 minutes total (driving onto the rack, getting it connected, doing the operation, and driving it off), and didn't charge me. I really like this shop.

The only reason they didn't / couldn't do the ZPC when I had the alignment done the first time was because I hadn't replaced the broken ABS wire at the time the alignment was done.

Hunter alignment systems have had the ability to do ZPC for about 9 years. There are menus that the tech steps through, and it is done quickly.

So... bottom line - try an alignment shop that is friendly to non-stock vehicles (e.g. NOT many Firestone/Bridgestone places), and ask them if ZPC is included in their alignment prices.

Or if taking it to a Toyota dealer, ask them why the heck would they charge you a shop hour for something that should be included as a 3 minute operation as part of an alignment.

I had the same issue with pins 4 and 12 not working. I tried pins 5 and 13 and it worked. My OBD appeared to be upside down, pins 5 and 13 are 4 and 12 when flipped upside down.

The pin numbering is the same whether the plug is installed right side up, or upside down. But it does take a bit of concentration to sort out which is which while looking at it while contorting down under the dash.

Was your success with a 2020 model?

None of the vendor specified pins are populated in mine. As shown in the picture. Mine is a 2020 ORP. Perhaps other 2020 models are different. If so that would be good information to know.

Pins 4&5 are both ground.
Pin 14 is CAN-bus low. On older models, before CAN-bus for OBD-II was fully defined, Toyota used to use that as a vendor defined pin (for Ts line) - that's why it was listed as the pin to connect for older 4runners. Not sure when the change happened. But when it did, and people used the older instructions of connecting ground to pin 14, they were actually grounding the CanBus Low line, rather than the Ts Line, with unexpected results...

Pin 12 - That was the vendor defined Ts Line up until 2020 - but is not available in my 2020.
Pin 13 - That was the vendor defined Tc Line (used for other things, but not ZPC) up until 2020 - and again not available in my 2020.

Did you ever get this resolved by the reputable shop?

I lifted my 2022 4runner ORP this past weekend and when I got it aligned today (Wednesday) it came off the alignment rack with PCS malfunction and TCS constantly illuminated since. Dealership isn't willing to take a look since it has aftermarket suspension either..

Yes I got it resolved by a dealer out here in Northern California. I had issues at first trying to find a dealer to re-align the sensors but eventually found one that was great to work with. Basically their service manager said most their employees lift their trucks\4Runners so they understand. I think my situation was a tad different then the norm. I lifted and installed a Rago hidden winch with a Badlands winch and its a tight fit which barely touched the grill in which pushed the sensor out a bit. But at the end of the day they were able to reset it and its been working flawless. My suggestion, go to another dealer or maybe you can ask a windshield installer since they might have the scan tool software available to them now, not sure for 2022's ...?

Hanlees Fairfield Toyota, I spoke with Lisa, shes the Service Manager. It has been couple of years and my situation was not the norm. I don't recall the cost, if it was anything it was nominal

I took our 2019 to the local dealer this morning (wife suggested paying a little extra rather than apply paper clips to a car still under warranty)… service rep had no idea what a zero point calibration was, and came back from a chat with the service manager, quoting 3 hours of labor. For a 3 minute job. This is another thing I’ll be doing myself.

I don't have a lift kit but do have a problem with my VSC after replacing my intermediate steering shaft on my 2014. I must have been one spline off and decided to take it to the dealer to get the wheel straight and do the zero point calibration. They charged me $300 and said the ZPC failed and said I need to replace the spiral cable at a cost of $1060. They said driving it the 12 miles to them screwed up a sensor. I call BS and want to try doing the ZPC myself but don't know the pins to use on the OBD II for my year. My VSC and steering lights stay on now and I hate to drop over a grand to get it fixed. Thanks in advance for any info.

I wonder if they're talking about the "clockspring." It's POSSIBLE this got damaged if someone turned the steering wheel too far while the intermediate steering shaft was removed. However unless there's a position sensor of some sort in there for the 5th gen, I can't imagine this ties into the ZPC process.
