Going back to 5th Gen’s. How’s your paint holding up?

I know, I know. Another thread on paint. This one is a little different in that I am wondering how your paint has been holding up! Specifically the Bacelona Red and White.. now that it’s been a few years ;) since these colors have been out. I was set on a white 4Runner but was questioning the use of their single stage paint versus the 2-stage for the rest of the colors. I really don’t know a lot about paints so I’d like to hear first hand experiences. Any issues with excess oxidization from the white paint? I’d really love to hear from the people that their trucks spend a majority of time exposed to the elements aka no garage..

Thanks in advance!

2014 Super White. The rear hatch had small red specs just below the window probably from day 1. Similar issue with the side mirror covers. Clay bar took care of it pretty easily. No other factory paint issues.

2017 Metallic Midnight Black.
Paint was pristine when I bought the truck in November.
It's now got a good amount of "Arizona pinstripe".
Other than lots of scratches, the paint itself has held up well under the scorching AZ sun (unless the PO garaged it).

I've had my 4Runner for nearly 4 years now. Spent the last 3 years in Utah and been in Alabama for the last 8 months. Mine has spent mixed time in the garage and outside but there has been plenty of sunshine on it and plenty of snow covered days as well. Mine is nautical blue but I'm sure barc red is similar. Anyways you can def see the pin striping on mine. The front hood and grill area seem to chip easily. I don't have any fading or oxidizing but as mentioned above it was previously garaged until my girlfriend took the garage spot (that's a different story...) and for the most part it lived in a pretty temperate climate in Utah with long winters. I'd say if you're really concerned about I would get clear vinyl film for the front of the hood at least and look into ceramic coating for the rest of the vehicle.

Since you're in Colorado give Front Range Auto a call. I don't have personal experience with them but seems like all the Colorado peeps and Instalanders love their ceramic work.

Super white 18’.

Just waxed the truck today.

Not noticing oxidizing yet. I will say that my paint is chipped all over. Pin stripping is pretty bad (Arizona), down to primer in some areas, paint generally seems weak.

Good clay bar session would take care of most of it but, you can only do that so many times, and it’s not like I’m going to stop going down trails.

Figure a respray or bedliner is in the future at some point. For now... touch up pen :/

Ditto what Mutant said -
5th gen paint seems thin, clear coat seems thin, chips easy.

I have a shit load of off road miles. The lower rocker panels and rear flares look like they have been blasted with a shotgun

I still have my 4th gen and the paint and clear coat seem significantly better.

If I would have known I would have put clear vinyl in several areas.

I find that the paint is either remarkably thin or remarkably soft. This this gets scratched if I look at it the wrong way. I just basically quit caring and will probably have it all touched up at a shop at some point.

have a 15' super white here, few chips in the paint in some odd spots as in behind the rear door and below the rear side windows.

today is paint correction day for me, paint has a good amount of swirls in from the good ole scratch o matic car washes and it looks to never have been waxed before besides the dealer re-conditioning.

will try to up load some before, during and after pics.

I don't understand why Toyota can't get paint right. I've had 3 Tacomas and 2 4Runners and the paint was shit on all of them - reserving judgment on my '20.

Lol after 37,000 miles on my 18 MGM, the paint is a mess with chips and scratches. Love the truck, but the paint quality is definitely questionable.

I didn't say in the earlier post but my 4Runner is Barcelona Red. I did have one of the fenders replaced in early 2018 and the paint on that fender doesn't have a scratch on it. On the door just past the fender the scratches start.

This tells me the paint applied at the factory is a bit softer or thinner than a normal paint job.

2019 Nautical Blue. It has the clear film on the hood, mirrors and front of the fenders. Just a few small chips on front grill area but it scratches so easily. I'm a bit of a nit picker as it comes to bird droppings as they will really mess up the paint. If I use a micro fiber towel with warm water and rub just a little bit to get the droppings off, it scratches the clear coat. I've done this on numerous cars including my 2019 Forester and never got scratches. The clear coat on the 4Runner seems very soft. No excuse for that, Toyota.

Well, thank you to those who have responded so far!

I guess that I am overthinking the single vs. 2 stage paint thing seeing that the general consensus is that the paint sucks no matter what color and will probably always need a little extra love... That is also what I have gathered from reading older threads. I guess I will end up with whichever color I can find the best deal on!
