This Topic Again - Gas Mileage and what contributes to your average MPG’s
Okay, MPGs on the 5th gen 4Runner has been discussed plenty of times here.
Just wanted to put together what I think contributes to your average MPG’s
Here is what contributes to getting an average of 13MPGs to 16MPGs :
City driving, traffic - stop and go.
Lift with Larger tires - 275’s, 285’s and up, especially with M/T tires (Tires are heavy)
Low tire air pressure
Armor, roof racks and loads of gear inside and out, more weight equals less MPGs
Higher speeds with higher RPMs, Around 70mph to 80mph (or higher)
Long idling or long warms ups.
Bad driving habits, such as rabbit starts, your lead foot, full throttle acceleration etc.
Towing a trailer or turtleback
Poor tune up or maintenance. Dirty air filter, oils and fluids need changing. Bad spark plugs, etc.
Air conditioner frequently on.
And here is what contributes to getting an average of 17MPGs to 22MPGs
Mostly highway cruising 65mph and under
Feather feet. Gentle driving techniques. Light on the throttle.
Hypermiling
Quality 265’s A/T tires or road tires with a bit higher air pressure.
Less gear installed or loaded in and out of your rig.
Less armor or none at all.
Tune up and maintenance is has been up to date.
AC is barely used
I’m sure that weather, altitude, octane rating, tuning, engine and exhaust mods will make MPGs +/- up or down.
With that said, I am currently in the 14.5-15MPG range
I have 285 M/Ts with a lift. Mixed city/hwy driving.
AC is on most of the time. It gets hot and muggy in the vehicle.
Highway speeds in Northern California when traffic is smooth drivers usually go 70-75mph cruising. 80-85+mph you’re in the fast lane.
If you are going below 70mph, you need to be in the slow lane with slow driving vehicles and trucks towing trailers and such. People in California drive at a fast pace.
Feel free to post if I am missing something.

For those that re-geared did your average MPG’s suffer or get better? What gear ratio are you running?

Just because you said that, I might just make another MPG thread.
Seriously, those threads are huge and will take days to sift through. This thread is designed to consolidate peoples experiences on getting their average MPGs so people don’t have to look through all that. That is why I created it.

I guess the logic of sarcasm might not be understood.
Like I said, the whole purpose of this thread is so you don’t have to go through all the posts of the main MPG thread.

Nope. Cheerios are too easy to pick up. Cocoa Pebbles does the most damage.

Mostly stock 3rd row LE, 17" p-AT tires. 50/50 city and highway driving. morning commute is drop off 3 passengers at schools, city streets, evening commute is highway, moderate driving habits. 82k miles in 3 years, 17 mpg average normal commute (pre corona).
Not surprisingly, this is the same data you'd get in the rest of the mpg threads.

Everything has been discussed at one time or another. No new threads.
I get 17-18 mpg. 2017 SR5, leveled, 285's. 50% highway (65 mpg), 30% dirt roads, 10% town.
Winter 30 psi. That 30% becomes mud. Spring, 35 psi. Summer I may go higher as we go over 120°f for a month or 2.
Live at 2,500 ft elevation, work at 500 ft, go over a 3,500 ft pass in between.
I'm also formerly from northern California, Modesto

You forgot rake. Negative rake gives better mpg on our runners. Even when lifted.

Options for better mpg:
Option 1-Air up tires to 100psi, start filling up with a 50/50 mix diesel and 93 octane with 4 oz of essential oils, hang healing crystal from mirror, turn off the ignition as soon as you get to highway speed.
Option 2-
open hood
remove radiator cap
back out 4Runner and throw it in the ditch
pull in corrola
open hood
install radiator cap
Woila!

This Topic Again - Gas Mileage and what contributes to your average MPG’s
Every time I see a fuel mileage thread on any forum I want to, for lack of a more accurate term, laugh. Fuel mileage is a function of engine/motor efficiency, weight, aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and to a small degree, fuel quality. Remember, driving habits affect engine/motor efficiency, so I didn’t forget. Improve any one of those things, mileage gets better. Unless someone can prove something like the moon’s orbit or the angle of the setting sun has an impact, every post trying to ‘splain it is basically like Trump throwing paper towels to an audience and saying “I helped”. Not trying to beat up on the OP but this has been discussed ad nauseam. So has LED dome lights and many other topics.
