$500 is ridiculous. I got mine done for $175 from a local fab shop. I'm also in SoCal which probably has the highest overland tax in the entire country. He didn't chop enough off to solve my rubbing issue, so he even redid it free of charge - tried to pay him, but he refused.

This was before he redid it:

I've also DIYed a chop and filler plate on my brothers tacoma in my garage. It wasn't hard, but my welding sucks, so it also wasnt pretty. I'd rather pay the $175 for an OEM look.

There are kits out there ranging from 15 to 40 dollars. The biggest part of this job is the fab work. Get it cut and ready to weld on yourself, and find a welder in your area. Including the cost of the kit and doing the fab work on your own, you could probably get it done for less than a 100 bucks with the right guy. Then take it home and paint. As an example, I got my prerunner bumper fabbed and welded for 450, including material. I just had to paint it. He had never done one before, but he enjoys unique projects like this and was only going to charge me 350, but I tipped him a 100 bucks because a good friendship with a welder is not a bad thing.

Is this par for the course?

Seems like a few cuts and some welding shouldn't run that high.

Then again, never had this done and don't have a baseline.

ETA: Is it possible to make the cuts and not weld a plate in? Hell I could do that in the driveway if there was a template / scope of work for the process.
I paid Demello $250 for mine, did an outstanding job.
