Cold start idle

Hi guys:

when I start in the morning, or when cold start, the idle starts at 1500 to 1600 rpm, drops to around 1100 to 1200, drops down a little to 1000, but it does not reach 800 until the temperature goes to normal operating temp(5-6 mins).

Is this normal? I attached a video of starting when 59F outside.

perfectly normal. You don't have to wait for the idle to drop to start driving just don't slam on it but take it easy the first few miles until it reaches operating temps.

Agreed. My last Tacoma had a similar but more fluctuating idle that drove me crazy so I replaced plugs/wires/coils/pcv but nothing. However, mine had a ROUGH idle when I was at park or at a light to the point of almost stalling out. Turned out to be a major vacuum leak. As long as that’s not happening then you should be straight

The cold start high idle on most newer cars is from the secondary air pump. Typically it pump fresh air into the vehicle's exhaust system to help the cats get to temp faster, which promotes a cleaner burn before the fumes exit the exhaust. My 4Runner has idled like you described above since I bought it new.

Start it, let it run for a couple of minutes and then drive off but drive easy until it warms up.

Posted on the 4th gen thread but finally found the cold start issue on the 5th gen thread.
Everyone is talking about 1500 and 1600 rpms but mine are 2000 rpms. Literally just bought a 2021 TRD Off Road last night and when I fired it up toady it scared the crap out of me when it shot to 2k rpms.
I thought this has got to be normal and an engine warm up thing but that seemed kind of high to me. Thoughts?

We have a GX as well and that V8 start-up makes this thing sound pretty tame . They both have a similar mannerism when you shut them down as well.
