What to Buy a Off-road or TRD Pro ?

I plan on buying a 5th Gen New and don't know which to buy.
Just get a TRD Pro or a Off road and put a 2 inch lift on it but is there really much difference off road ?
I do not want to ruin its on road performance since it will be my daily driver. FYI I live in Iowa and this will be my hunting rig with annual trips out west.
If you say Off road what lift is the best not what is the cheapest. Thanks

So if you get a Pro you not lifting it but if you get a OR you are lifting it?

I think you should think if you are lifting it or not.

Stock I would get the Pro. Lifting OR.

I bought my OR because I knew I was lifting it and I wanted KDSS.

If you don't want to mod it, then the Fox suspension in the Pro would perform better off road than the ORP. However, while the stock suspension of the ORP/SR5 is pretty soft, its still a very capable vehicle that would work for probably 95% of the people on this forum.

That being said, if you would like to do mods, the money you could save going with an ORP will allow you to get a better performing suspension system than the Fox shocks. Plus you might have some left over for off-road armor.

Functionally it really comes down to the KDSS, which comes with the Off Road. The Fox Shocks, or similar can be purchased. The rest is cosmetic stuff.

If you hunting, why not get the Tacoma. It's easy to clean the bed. Getting deer guts out of the back of a 4runner is dang near impossible.

Yes, this was actually a big issue for us upgrading from our 2016 Trail to a 2020 TRD Pro. My wife despised not having auto headlights, plus I was contemplating dropping around $2000 on a new stereo and probably another $3000 on a new suspension. Getting dual climate, remote start, etc. in the 2020 were also great perks.

I actually think the Pro arguably gained more value in 2020 if you were interested in the interior and equipment upgrades that differentiate it. Army Green was also really nice to set our 4Runner apart from most on the road (since you see so many damn white, silver, and black vehicles).

Now, if only this vehicle had an electronic lift gate from the factory (the one last thing my wife gets grumpy about).

Just went through the same thing with my girlfriend, she had to have the auto headlights and traded a 18 trd orp for a 20 pro. I'd say go with the pro

I am 6’2 and don’t fit into a Tacoma. I currently drive a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500.
As far as deer guts I’m thing a receiver hitch carrier. For the 4Runner.
I would like a small size and more capable off road.
If I got the TRD Pro yes I would leave suspension stock just can’t see messing with the Fox Shocks.
The OR I would most likely only lift 2 inches at most.
I test drove a TRD Pro and it was nice.
Being from Iowa would you undercoat it for rust prevention ?
Just FYI I always carried tire chains for a Truck would I need them on a 4Runner ?

I went with a 2019 TRD OR mostly because I was able to negotiate a good price and still get a very capable vehicle. I also wanted KDSS. At the time, the TRD Pro was selling at retail or sometimes higher for high demand colors.

I went with a Dobinsons 2.5” suspension lift with Dobinsons upper control arms. Tires were upgraded to Falken AT3W in stock size. I’ve also added Victory 4x4 roof rack, sliders and their winch bumper with a warn winch. The factory stereo with the horrible Toyota Entune system was replaced with a Kenwood head unit with wireless CarPlay. All of this was still less expensive than going with a TRD Pro.

I use my 4Runner as a daily driver and it’s our family weekend car and adventure road trip vehicle. We put 30,000 miles on it in our first year of ownership with two of those months on COVID-19 lockdown (no travel). We did a 6,000 mile road trip to Arizona in December that included over 300 miles of off road driving.

Drives just fine on road with the KDSS. Does a great job off road. The Crawl Control saved our ass once when deeply stuck on a mesa in Arizona.

If I was faced with the same decision on a 2020 I’d still go with the TRD OR. While I love the Army Green, the silver OR doesn’t show the off road pinstripes too much. I would be afraid to damage a TRD Pro in green. Put pinstripes all over my silver T4R when it had less than 500 miles on it.

Most online sources say the TRD OR is the best deal for what you get, and I agree. The KDSS was the deciding factor for me (also the sunroof. When I got mine, I couldn't find a Pro anywhere in the US that had a sunroof and wasn't going to wait months to custom order one, especially for the money). It just drives so much better on road and off compared to one that doesn't have it. I do wish I had one of the Pro colors like the green, grey, or one of the blues, but it wasn't worth $10k extra for it and losing KDSS to get it. Besides, Toyota paint is garbage and I'll probably end up painting it anyway, since mine has 15k on it and is pinstriped to hell already.

it really comes down to a couple factors.
  • do you want KDSS?
  • do you want the Pro color? is it worth an extra $10k or so to get it?
  • do you need the fancy stuff like dual climate control?

If you don't really need the color and extra fancy stuff, or do really want the KDSS, then it's a better deal to get the OR and upgrade the suspension yourself, plus you can get a lot better suspension for the money. Seems a lot of guys that get the Pro upgrade the suspension anyway.

If you get new, don't get the Pro Bro. It's not worth it. If you are getting used and can get a decent deal on the Pro Bro, go for it.

TO OP: IMHO if you planning to lift I would go with “off-road” with KDSS, as I believe that would give you the best “on” and “off-road” ride 5th gen has to offer…. And you will save a lot of $ by not paying for the “pro” sticker\name.

I have been using cheap cargo carrier (platform) for the past couple of decades... that thing had more large game on it than I care to remember, and it is much easier to clean then any truck bed… also it is much easier to load and unload vs. the truck bed.
Here is one of the"cheap" options:

I think the only thing different between the two that you can't change aftermarket is the KDSS on the OR trims.

See this for table comparison between ORP and TRDP
2020 Toyota 4Runner Specs & Options

Also I don't think the Pro has dual climate control? I don't remember seeing it when test driving 2020 and also the website doesn't mention it, except on the limited.

Went PRO as the cost was not that much more over the OR.

Also didn't want a sunroof.

The PRO has a lift and a cosmetic package that costs a lot more than installing a really nice lift yourself.

OR has the option of KDSS.

If you don't mind paying after for the lift an OR with or without the KDSS is a far better deal.

If you get a PRO AND then get a lift, I think you're wasting money unless a paint color is that important to you.
