You get a trip permit from your local DMV's website and print it out. Chances are the seller will take their plates off before turning over keys. There should be a document where you fill out a temporary trip with the vehicle and you have to input the VIN info, etc. I believe the document should be valid for few days hence "temporary trip" where you intend to have the vehicle registered when you return to the location of where you plan to have the vehicle garaged. Probably run you $15 or something like that.
I would make sure to have all the paperwork in order from P.O in case you get pulled over. If you don't have a current title to the vehicle on you then I wouldn't travel.
