Bad Popping While Turning and OffroAD
Ok so here is my Problem, I have just recently been experienceing a Popping sound In my Front end of car sounds like my CVs are shot, it happens when i break and then let off the breaks (pop) it all so happens when i hit small bumps at low speeds in the woods off road at my camp, and when i turn sharp at low speeds it will make a loose POP and sound, I have a Toytec 2.5 inch spacer with no diff drop kit, and spacer in the rear, i am assuming from what i have read that my CVs have been in too much stress because the spacers are causeing too much droop to much, i have grabbed booth my front differential shafts and they are a little loose one looser than the other and "clinks" a little when shaking it hard. SO i go to my brothers brand new 2013 stock tacoma, shake his frt diff shafts his shakes just like mine does. so yall experts help me out before i go to a shop and get ripped. thanks

I doubt your 2.5" Toytec kit has your half shafts angled too much. Check all your bolts and make sure they are tight, especially your lower control arm cam bolts. Are you running any armor??? I have a similar clunk but I was able to isolate it to the front skid. Does the sound happen when your vehicle is static, ie. not moving and you turn the wheel? If its not a loose bolt, it could be a number of things - ball joints, rack and pinion, motor mount, brake calipers, skid plate, sway bar... hard to diagnose these things sometimes.

Do you have the sway bar relocate spacers and support spacers in? Sounds like the problem........... Creaking Noise

socal- nothing seems too be loose, to my knowledge. i have not tried turning my wheels while static, what is really throwing me is when, i go to stop at redlights while breaking if i let off rite before i stop it Pops, not a raddle like a loose bolt, but it pops when i go at low speeds over bumps but more like a raddleing Pop then like something may be loose.
Harper- Its doesnt sweak or creak there is no contact on the sway bar, and i have had my spacers on awhile proably, about over 20,000 miles,

You likely have bent alignment tabs on the front lower control arms. This will cause a loud popping and sometimes jarring motion while turning or when causing them LCA's to move. Total Chaos offers some stronger weld in tabs or you can add more metal to them for added stability.
If this is the case then when moving forward or backward (depending on how they are bent), your alignment will be off as well.

He does not have bent alignment tabs
Read Harpers response then click the link he supplied and look at the picture! Do you have these spacers?? If not get them!
Also did you buy and install the sway bar relocate brackets? If not then you should also install them!

I have the same popping noise. A Google search turns this issue up all over the place, the FJ and Taco guys experience the same stuff.
Here is a thread I started re. the subject.
Anyone have a "clank" when braking in reverse??
In my truck is primarily happens when turning, and/or braking… especially in reverse.
I think I narrowed it down to the front Shrockworks skid… not sure though. These things are so hard to pinpoint because you can't really have your buddy hang on to your under carriage to try and find out where the noise is coming from while you drive back and forth. Ive all but given up on all the noises my truck makes...
Here is a thread from the FJ forum… same stuff.

Place a hose where you think the noise might be coming from and put the other end on your ear. The shorter the hose, the better.
This effectively works like a stethoscope; just make sure you keep it away from any moving parts. Of course you'll have to keep the hood up, so use this method only in a suitable location.
This trick may not work in all situations (works well when the vehicle is stationary and you can stand near the place where you think the noise might be coming from). The important thing is to keep the hose to the absolute minimal length.

If you have a gopro camera, try mounting it under you truck securely in the area you think the noise maybe coming from. Take a drive around the block and see what's been recorded.

While there is merit to this idea, a mic tends to pick up noise in a more ambient fashion, making it hard to pinpoint, especially if it bounces off the various shapes/materials in/under a vehicle. This holds especially true if the mic is built into the camera.
The hose-trick will allow you to more precisely pinpoint the source because it only picks up noise in a specific area.
You might be able to achieve some of the same results by having a wired microphone that you can move around and then compare the decibel level of a specific noise across locations.
For example, with the hose you will be able to hear knock in a specific cylinder. which is a great help when trying to diagnose misfires in the field.

I have experienced this with the 3rd and 4th gens. It's usually only when your steering is at full lock and the suspension is cycling. It's the steering stops on the lower control arm and knuckle. The 3rd gens used to have a plastic ball that went over the stud. While our 5th gens don't have the stud, there is still metal on metal contact which results in the popping.
I bet you can duplicate the noise if you have the steering at full lock and jamming on the brakes fairly hard.
