Magnuson Supercharger on 2020 4Runner Questions

I have a 2020 4Runner and use it to tow a bit and drive quite a bit of highway. I find the vehicle to be grossly under-powered. It seems to be hunting for gears when climbing very small inclines and if I'm bucking any wind at all, it doesn't see 5th gear at all. Fuel economy goes from 19's to 13's without a trailer and drops to 11's with a small trailer, one for a golf cart. I'm looking for something to help with the power and am wondering about economy.

I was looking for a turbo package for the truck, and ran across a couple video's for super chargers and it seems like it's a better fit.

I'm hoping someone has experience with one in a similar driving style. I drive close to speed limit which means when it's 85 MPH, I drive at least 85 MPH. This normally yields me gas mileage in the 15's. If there is a wind, the truck wants to be in 3rd gear and RPM's are very high.

It seems to me that with nearly 100 HP, and huge torque increase, the truck will stay in higher gears, won't have problems at higher speeds and won't hunt for gears while towing.

Please give me your feedback if you have a super charger installed and have experience pulling a small trailer and drive at interstate speeds. I'd like to know what your experience with vehicle performance is. Does it hunt for gears anymore? Does it stay in 5th gear? What do you see for gas mileage? Did it significantly decrease, stay the same or get better? If you stay out of the boost, how does it perform? I'm not looking for a dragster, just a properly functioning truck.

Right now, I'm reading that Magnuson doesn't have a tune for the 2020 yet, but may by late summer.

Thanks.

2014 with the URD supercharger kit.
I certainly understand where you're coming from with the downshifts to 3rd, sometimes 2nd going up grades with my boat. My boat & trailer is about 2500lbs, and it occasionally goes down through the mountains of eastern KY to The Smokies. The supercharger really does help with the additional power, though it will still downshift to 4th up the grades. I don't usually see the high side of 4500rpm any more.

Honestly if you're looking for mpg's while towing, you bought the wrong vehicle. An F150 with the EcoBoost V6 & 10 speed transmission would have been a better option. There's no way that an NA V6 and 5spd tranny can match that with a 10ft pole. Drop the supercharger that same engine and you're doing better with power, but the mpg isn't going to improve. Outside of towing, I saw about a 1mpg drop for adding the SC kit.

The 4Runner is only slightly more aerodynamic than a brick, so anything above 75mph is going to suck fuel. Drop weight behind it and extra friction from the other axle, and you're down more. I recently dragged an empty boat trailer (700lbs) across flat Ohio I-70 at 75mph and still saw about 16mpg versus the normal 19-20mpg with a slight (<10mph) headwind. Want better mpg? Slow down. You'll see a big mpg improvement at or below 70mph, with or without the trailer.

Well to begin, its a 4Runner, not a Ferrari. Your fuel economy drops significantly after your RPMs go above 2K at highway speeds because it has the aerodynamics of a barn, and the bulletproof yet primitive 5spd transmission.

A supercharger helps a lot, but it won't make your gas mileage any better at the speeds you're traveling. I have a magnuson, which adds about 80hp, 80tq, and there's a huge improvement when added to a stock setup, nothing crazy, but it definitely brings it to life and makes the 4R feel the way it should've from the start.

Interstate performance improves drastically, no hunting for gears on mild inclines. However, if you're pulling a trailer, or driving 80+ you'll still get 9mpg/18mpg respectively. A SC doesn't change the gearing, doesn't make the engine need any less fuel, and doest improve aerodynamics. I'm not trying to downplay the performance, but you need to manage your expectations. If you're looking to drive fast then you may need to look at a different vehicle.

I'm pretty interested in the Super Charger as well. I bought a 2004 Tacoma and had them put in a TRD Super Charger before I took it off the lot, was such an improvement.

But apparently for 2020 TRD no longer offers them? You *must* go aftermarket?

How does that effect your warranty? I definitely do not want to muck w/ that.

The TRD superchargers were always made by Magnuson. TRD is just an engineering firm.

Warranty work cannot be denied unless the aftermarket part caused the failure. Also your warranty cannot just be voided.

Has anyone put one in a 2020 yet? Curious about the cost and the overall improvement.

Thanks!

Not sure anyone has tried a '20 yet. Might have an issue with all the nanny "features." It's at least something that needs to be researched, Magnuson & URD might be looking for volunteers. I think Magnuson required flashing the ECU which could be more problematic than the URD black box.

Yeah I think I hit 85 like once. I wasn't towing anything, either.. And I'm a dude who used to set my CC at 100 on my way into work with no traffic on the road (different vehicle and 4AM).

I have no desire to be over about 70 in the 4runner. And again, that's without a trailer. Anyone who does might just maybe have the wrong tool for the job IMHO.

Magnuson comes with a 36000mi warranty as added insurance if the SC is installed by an SAE certified mechanic. But only applies to vehicles within thier original warranty period. Didnt stop me though, put mine on at 86k miles.

the plan with ours is to install one in 2 years. So wife's will prolly be at around that same mileage. its cheaper than a new car (especially cheaper than the explorer ST)

So I actually emailed Magnuson directly this morning asking about the 2020. Here was the reply:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Magnuson Products.

Currently not available at this present time however, we know the supercharger system and components will be the same while Toyota has changed their computer/ECU architecture on the new 2020 4Runner models.

We have received several computers/ECU’s in for testing but have not been able to read/write and we’re still waiting for the aftermarket software companies to provide tuning capabilities so we can then provide our calibration for the supercharger system. Unfortunately, we do not have a time table for availability, and feel free to sign-up for our newsletter: Mailing List it’ll keep you informed on new products as they become available.

Kind regards,

Kevin Woodruff

Field Sales Manager
Magnuson Products LLC.
