I am wanting to upgrade my 2016 4R (non-JBL) sound quality. It has been about 20 years since I was into the car audio scene, plus I have a terrible memory. Looking for advise or suggestions.
I'm pretty decided that I want to upgrade my front 6x9s and dash tweeters first, then probably amp since I don't think the stock head unit can push enough power to them. After that, if I don't feel that the fronts are enough, I'll get the 6.5" for the back doors. I don't really use my hatch speakers, so I probably won't get those and I'm not planning on getting a sub.
Equipment:
* **Front Door + Dash** - [Infinity Kappa 90csx](
Infinity Kappa 90csx Kappa Series 6"x9" component speaker system at Crutchfield) 6x9 woofers, tweeters, crossover
* **Back Door** - [Infinity Kappa 62ix](
Infinity Kappa 62ix Kappa Series 6-1/2" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield) 6.5" 2-way speakers
* **Amp under passenger seat** - [JL Audio JD400/4](
JL Audio JD400/4 JD Series 4-channel car amplifier — 75 watts RMS x 4 at Crutchfield) class D amp, 100W RMS x 4 at 2Ω
I think would satisfy my needs/wants (for now anyways).
My ?s:
1. Regarding the front speakers, I have read reviews that the tweeters on the Kappa component set are shrill and people have recommended the [Infinity Kappa 20mx](
Infinity Kappa 20mx Kappa Series 2" midrange speakers at Crutchfield) 2" midrange speakers instead. I don't expect anyone to have abundant knowledge on this exact setup, but for those that have installed tweeters in 4Runners, which would be a better way to go? If I ended up getting the 20mx, would I be better off getting a 2-way 6x9 for the front door?
2. Still on the dash tweeters, I have seen on other forums that people have been putting a 3.5" 2/3- way speaker instead of a tweeter. Would it be better for me to just get 2 pairs of 2-way speakers for the front door and dash?
3. Any advice on how to wire all this together? Suggestions on speaker adapters to get so I don't have to do a lot of splicing wires? Is there a special T-harness I need to get to connect the amp to the head unit? I can't for the life of me remember how to wire the speakers through the crossover, to the amp, then to the head unit. Any guides would be greatly appreciated.
4. Would you make any changes to the components that I have chosen? Bad experience with the Kappas? Better to get JL Audio speakers? I would rather have better sound over an easy install.
5. I saw online that the stock head unit and stock speakers are at 4Ω. If I put the Kappa components in first that have an impedence of 2.5Ω, would that make the head unit run too hot? What if I wired the tweeter and woofer in series? Wouldn't that give it a total of 4Ω?
Thx so much for reading. Any help and opinions on this setup would be GREATLY appreciated.
