I miss my truck

My son headed to his brothers home to help around the house with the upcoming birth of their second child.
He usually drives our Dodge Magnum but it has some issues that might leave him stranded.
So we swapped cars.
He has the 4runner for three weeks and I'm driving the Magnum.
I could drive my 68 F100 (daily driver for 35 years until I got the 4runner) but it's over 100° until September and the 68 has no A/C. Guess I've gotten spoiled in the six months I've had the 4runner. And I just plain like driving it.
Two more weeks.

(If the Magnum breaks down then son will be driving the 4runner and I'll be back in the 68. Not the end of the world)

At least the 68 has wing vents to create some good airflow. Also, my Dad's '69 had a floor vent on drivers side that could be opened for air into the footwell, assume the '68 would have that as well. Those are 2 things they should have left on trucks IMO.

Still hot when it's 100° out, but at least makes it a bit more manageable. Would definitely be worse in a modern truck with no AC.

I totally understand. I had a paid-for '10 TE and loved it. Then last fall I bought a $59k Rubicon. I missed the 4Runner everyday I drove the Rubi. This spring I sold the Rubi and bought a '20 ORP. So it only took $50k to fix "missing my 4R". Maybe you should just go buy a spare 4Runner.

Wifes 2500 Ram has the 5.7 hemi. Think she'd notice if I swapped engines?

Bummer, the Magnum might be fun with the Hemi. It came with it as an option.

Oh I like the Magnum. I like my 68, even when it's an oven outside. But I'm all sweaty when I get to work.
But my 4runner just fits right.
I don't like driving my Wifes pickup. 07 Ram 2500 crew cab long bed. Suspension is seemingly nonexistent (perfect for towing).

Son came back yesterday.
Zero issues with the 4runner.
Said he got a bit lost at one point. Construction with entire roads blocked. At night. And he was tired. He got frustrated and just off-roaded it back to the highway.

I'm glad we swapped vehicles and he took the 4runner. (yes, he is back)
Got a call today. The Magnum broke down. Had it towed home.
No one else here knows anything about cars. He said the transmission went out, because he heard the dealer say it would last year.
I had him describe what the car did and it sounds like the fuel pump. He said the engine just lost power and stopped running (not transmission at all, sigh).
Engine cranks but doesn't start.
Only have tomorrow morning to look at it as I hit the road (trucker).
So he'll be in the 4runner and I'm back in the 68 F100 with no a/c and it's over 110° every day until September.

After diagnosing the Magnum I guessed is was the fuel pump. Replaced it this morning. Not the problem.
Tired of messing with this car so Wife bought another to throw money at, 04 Grand Cherokee. She paid for a dealer warranty so someone else can tinker with it.
I have my 4runner back.

Why can't your son drive the truck with no A/C? How old is he?

Ha! Kids today are spoiled, they'd melt! That's my guess.

OP, what did you dislike so much about the Rubicon?

Son is late 20's, he has no issues with no A/C. He does have issues with it being manual transmission (there's the spoiled kids part, sort of). If he has driven the 68, he just needs more wheel time. It's just more expedient for me to drive it because it sits at my work 5 days straight.
I like Rubicons. This is more practical and affordable for our needs, particularly where we live.

We took it out for a drive around the neighborhood.
Ran the transfer case through all the SelecTrac modes.
Found the transfer case crossmember on a rock, the only impact. Kinda jarred sons spine, lol.
It needs A/T tires, currently sporting highway tread.
So far not a bad SUV.
I like my 4runner more.

We had one of those (also on '04 model) for 10 years and 125,000 miles with no problems. Guy I sold it to in 2014 is still driving it. The 4.0 is generally a solid motor, but it's no speed demon and will struggle at interstate speeds when hills start getting steep. We really, really liked ours and it served us well, but I always wanted a 4R... Like you, after having one, we like the 4Runner just a tad better.
