It's an easy mistake to be made and I suspect that it was most likely the wrong belt now that I thought about it more. If it was installed improperly it probably would have failed pretty quickly. Glad you got it sorted out either way.
When I replaced my belt last month I was just shy of 134,000 miles on the rig. The belt looks almost new with no cracks on it. So it probably didn't need to be replaced but I'm glad I got a trail spare now.
