It's an easy mistake to be made and I suspect that it was most likely the wrong belt now that I thought about it more. If it was installed improperly it probably would have failed pretty quickly. Glad you got it sorted out either way.

When I replaced my belt last month I was just shy of 134,000 miles on the rig. The belt looks almost new with no cracks on it. So it probably didn't need to be replaced but I'm glad I got a trail spare now.

Sounds like you have the failed belt in hand . How is it damaged? Is it shredded, cut, worn through? Or did it just pop off a pulley? I have a friend who had a pulley seize up a mountain and he drove it down with the belt squealing all the way. He said it cooked itself pretty good but never failed.

I would bet the tensioner spring is weak and it got enough slack to derail.
