Dang it, now I'm worried and gonna have to check it out and see what I did.

If I sealed it, it would have been with something like RVT i have on hand for moto. Would not have used bathroom caulk or something like that as it shrinks over time. Butyl would def be the best, every roof vent on vans or RV's uses that as the go to.

I'd think it would have leaked by now with all the rain we get here. Plus all the offroad miles knocking around with all that weight up top. But knock on wood, who knows.

I placed my order from RA....I hope it matches the height of the spacers that came with the Prinsu.

This person had a lot of good suggestions:
EcoTechne Roof Rack Installation (5th Gen)

If you look at greenland offroad's mount, it can be made water-tight with butyl rubber:
4Runner Aluminum Roof Rack System — GREENLANE OFF-ROAD

Same as RA motorsports (local to me in Canada) - this is the one I went with. I included a pic of their rack mount (3D printed plastic with a hard rubber + neoprene gasket)
03-09 4Runner Modular Roof Rack | Element By RA Motorsports

There are pictures of the mounts the rack mounts on to. So the key is go get one you can easily make water-resistant.

I also included a pic of the prinsu rack -that one suuuuuuuuuuuucks for trying to keep moisture out. You have to use a lot of something everywhere to keep water out.

I recently removed and sold my prinsu rack -the mounts sucked as they embedded into the paint and when you remove it, it removes paint which exposes bare metal. So I had to clean up all the mount points (very annoying given the small space you have to work with), etch prime, paint, and then clear coat. The prinsu mounts are round aluminum cylinders. The design of them cup water into the mount and concentrate pressure into the contact point on your roof.

I have the Victory rack waiting or go on. With all of the people running racks how come there aren’t more posts of this kind of corrosion taking place?

I’ve seen the one or two mentioned but not outside of that.

Really want to avoid leaking and rust living in the salt belt.

I've been thinking the same thing also.

The only explanations I can surmise are:
1) Resale. If you pull your rack and notice corrosion, it might affect the person's ability to sell his rack (undesirable product) so people just kinda stay quiet about it and chalk it up to a learning lesson. Could also relate to resale of their own vehicle.

2) They simply don't know. They can throw the roof rack on top and leave it there until the cows come home and never check it. These people will either never know or won't know until it's too late.

If there's a leak, there's no guarantee that you'll ever notice it. Someone mentioned here that water started leaking down their seat belt. IMO, that's the best possible scenario because there's a big ol **** you telling you something is wrong. Otherwise, if you get a slow drip, it'll be enough to constantly keep the metal wet and slowly rust but never enough to tell you something is wrong. Those cylindrical spacers that companies use as a mount are brutal IMO -if you gunk up enough silicone at the bottom, you could seal that seam nicely but then that turns the cylinders into cups that hold water. The only way the cup empties is if it evaporates or completely drips into your vehicle.

The victory rack bracket is great in that if you put butyl rubber down and then a silicone washer down, the bracket squishes the washer down with even force.

If you have a prinsu, it would unevenly apply pressure to the silicone washer -the solution to this is to add an aluminum washer on top of the silicone washer to help distribute the pressure from the cylindrical spacer. I didn't and the spacer cut right through the washers because of the pressure -where the washer didn't cut, it squirted out as if you tried to squeeze a wet bar of soap as hard as you could with your hands.

gratitude

While I don't have anything valuable to add to this discussion, I want to thank everyone in here for sharing their experiences around making the roof rack mounting location watertight.

As this conversation continues (through this thread, and other previous threads), it becomes very apparent just how lacking the included mounting solutions are from popular vendors.

It's great to see proven solutions being referenced in this thread, along with new testing initiatives.

I contacted a number of forum members that have a Sherpa and they all report no problems with leaks. I like their solution because they use the same approach as Toyota for mounting w/o need for extra sealant, silicone or otherwise.

UpTOPOverland is a no-drill rack and only recommends the RTV on the bolt itself (I would do this for any roof rack as a comfort factor). Not sure if this is what you're looking for, or a true no-sealant with just gaskets.

Link is to their install directions: Bravo Rack Install

So you just put those down and then placed the spacer on top with no silicone or anything?

I did almost the exact same.. I would add Butyl tape as it’s more pliable and lasts decades. It’s what is used for our windshield. No leaks so far.
