Tires
I got recently 285/70 yokohama tires and having to do the mount chop because they rub.Discount tire said they wouldn't rub why I went with them but they do So now im debating on taking them back and going bigger to 285/75. Wanted some input on what people thought about both tire sizes. Did you like one more then the other.

Assuming you are going for the chop now. Not sure the 285/75 (34ish) can fit in the spare (if thats a concern for you).

Yes, this is one of the considerations I made just stepping up from a 275/70-17 to 285/70-17 AT3W's this weekend. You can get a 285/70-17 anywhere and that size fits in the well. But, the bigger concern I would have is the performance. I can tell my shift points are a little longer now. The 285/70-17 is just about at the limit of turning my 4Runner into the gear hunter and I live in the hills and don't want that. I had a 1.5/1" cornfed spacer lift prior to the 285's and with light to moderate articulation I have no rubbing on my flaps or fender liner. I have about an inch in that position. Large image is the front fender turned to the closet contact on the fender liner with the right tire being pushed up with a view looking straight down inside the fender well. The second image is the left(driver) tire being pushed down off camber with about an inch from the mudflap. I know these trucks vary, but it does seem that the Pros have less of a clearance issue than the OR & ORP's. I know they come with the fender liner mod and I wonder if they have a different caster setting.

Oh yea Im not sure Id want to go up to 34 without regearing. For my line of work, Im driving up the 395 alot and boy with 285s one, you could tell the difference when driving up from Bishop to Mammoth. I just stick it in 3rd and cruise at 55ish mph lol.
Also, this is the Falken M/T (E) 285 when fully compressed. Had to remove the flaps but its still CLOSE!

I love the drive up 395. I haven't been up that way for about 8 years now. Would always go to Parchers Rainbow resort back in the day. The Sherwin summit, as I recall going to Mammoth from Bishop, is a long steep grade. Nice to know you are good when fully compressed. Suprised you couldn't pull 65 up that grade.

The South Lake area is gorgeous! Good pick! If you ever wanna take a trip up there, feel free to join us!
Regarding Sherwin summit... I can hit 65 but my trans fluid temps at the pan start going high with converter temps jumping from lows of 205 to highs of 240. I just need to hit it with good momentum but thats hard with traffic!

Yeah. First went to South Lake in the 70's with my parents. Backpacked all of the high country when younger. I'll let you know. I love late September, early October up that way. How much extra weight are you carrying on your 4Runner? Bumpers, Rack, etc. I never had a problem with my 2001 supercharged 4Runner taking that grade at speed or the grapevine either way maintaining 70.

Yea that is definitely a great time to be out there!
Hmm...lets see here, bumper + winch is about 110ish lbs. Steel skids +Sliders is another 300 lbs plus tools/gear in the back is another 150. Roof rack gear is about 55lbs The backpacks are about 40-50 lbs combined. So total extra weight (not including the extra weight increase of the tires) is about 665lbs. Like I said, I could hit those speeds and maintain them but I'm iffy on trans temps as I have heated the fluid up to 250+ on some off road trips. Will flush it at 30k so that should make me feel better driving up to mammoth haha

Hmm you may lose some acceleration with the 34s but some folks here have had no issues with that. For offroading, the 34 would be nicer off road. I believe Jetboy used a 33 on his first Rubicon trip and then 34s on the second. He found the 34s to provide a much better experience.

you really shouldnt rub that badly with 33s. You can push in the fender liner with a heatgun and remove the mudflaps per an earlier suggestion. What are your alignment specs? Caster closer to 4 degrees will help alleviate rubbing in the back as well.

I got the sprint booster way back so that should help. The guy at the shop said i shouldn't have to regear unless im going with 35s or above. I wouldn't just because of how much it will be to regear. Thats the kind of things im looking for is in the end which tire did they like better. plus im a daily driver. for now not sure what my work commute is because im looking for a job.
