What is this for?

I got this when I received my replacement rear fox shock. I have no idea what or where it goes though? Any thoughts..

I'm wondering if it was some kind of protector for the reservoir hydraulic line? Otherwise a shaft protector for shipping? Either way it doesn't look like something that needs to be installed.

I would assume it is to protect the line between the shock body and reservoir.
