2013 4runner hard to shift, starter won't engage.

hey all,
so i just replaced the battery in my 2013 sr5 at 140k miles because it was finally time. the battery was fully dead but if it would start right up.

replaced with an ever start AGM battery, 4runner fired right up but was out of gas so died. I added some gas, the car started right up, I tried to switch to drive. When shifting out of drive the selector feels as if its gummed up and very resistant to go into gears and will not go into drive.

I tried turning the car off then on again and now when you turn the key to ignition the point where you'd usually hear the starter kick in, now nothing.

We are planning to move from New York to Kentucky this weekend and this is really giving me a headache.

Any ideas or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I have disconnected the battery and reconnected to no avail.

Selector feel has zero to do with battery. In my 2013, after having the battery disconnected, when starting for the first time there’s a 50% chance of it turning off. It feels like the ECU or TB is learning.

I’d suggest getting a volt meter and checking your new battery’s voltage. Make sure battery has over 12V first. Preferably closer to 12.3 as a minimum. Assuming it does, then it should crank. But prior to first start put key in ON position and wait about 30 seconds. You’ll hear the TB opening and closing.

Let us know the voltage.

Also once it starts check voltage again and make sure the alternator is charging.

Running the old battery as long as you did could have put undue stress on the alternator and it decided to quit. Alternator is not designed to keep charging a failing battery, just to maintain the system. Agree with making sure the new battery is fully charged. Check your connections again as well. Every time I have disconnected my battery the system starts and shuts right back down. It's the ECU going through it's diagnostic checks. As far as the gear selector, my 12' is getting stiff and probably needs some cleaning and synthetic grease. Might be the same problem with yours. But it should be an unrelated problem to the battery issue.

I had the shifter basically lock up in an 05 tacoma I had a while back when it sat unused for a few months in a dirt driveway. Some penetrating oil on the cable at the ends got it moving a bit and then lots of moving it back and forth got it free. If the range selector switch doesn't think it's in park or neutral it's not going to start either so check and see if that's gummed up too.
