Rear storage door for 5th..my quick and dirty

I got tired of looking at the gaping hole....and stuff I put in just fell out so I decided to whip out a mickymouse solution!http://www.toyota-4runner.org/attach...1&d=1520823639 http://www.toyota-4runner.org/attach...1&d=1520823731 http://www.toyota-4runner.org/attach...1&d=1520823801 I think I will hit it with some black Plasti-dip for a better match. Material=some aluminum sheet (former sign....something about Radar Enforcement?!) a sheet of cardboard for a template and an alarm system door lock then black paint. There are two tabs at the bottom that go in the slots and the lock sucks the door up tight....no rattles!

I see the slot on the bottom to keep it in. What did you decide for the top

Great mod

The alarm lock has a wiper arm that swings into another slot in the top and it is solid! I could see doing this out of lexan or another kind of plastic material as well...I cut the aluminum with a jig saw. You could do a 2 piece hinge instead of slots too.

didnt notice it was a lock. I have a lock that has a handle too. So no need to lock it to keep it closed. Just a possible upgrade

I like the idea of a lock AND lever......I was just thinking of this spot as a good place to store guns if you have to leave them in the truck at the store or something.

Makes me wonder if you could fit a folded Kel-Tec Sub2000 in there with extra mags...... Surely a Henry AR7 should fit right?
I also wonder if a vinyl wrap would match the body molding a little better....

I think I can simulate the texture with some Plasti-Dip if I ''splatter'' it!

A Ruger 10/22 Takedown with the Magpul X-22 stock will fit (I just checked), but it has to lean outward because the buttstock is a bit bigger than the front part of the opening. But with the cover like you OP made, it would close and be fully concealed.
If you run iron sights with a tapered barrel, it might fit with the buttstock to the rear, but mine is a lite with an inexpensive red dot on it.

I made a "false bottom" for my center console years ago out of aluminum. If you get some speaker cabinet carpet and some 3M interior spray adhesive you can cover that panel nicely.

Spray both surfaces, apply and trim with a razor blade.

Nice mod!

OMG this is the DUMEST thing I have ever seen.

Can I have it?

I'll pay for shipping.

Any plans to mass produce? I suppose I could try to hack one out myself.

I like to putter around in the garage and it just struck Me to whip it up from the junk I had (yes I prefer ''Collector'' over hoarder!) I could surely improve the look by sourcing some heavy plastic with the proper finish to match better next time. I would get some tracing paper too as I used a piece of kids poster board and just freehanded it. I finish shaped the aluminum on my grinding wheel after cutting out with a fine jigsaw but you could cut it well and tune it with a dremel I suppose. You could make one with stuff from Home Depot for under $20 I bet! Too bad Toyota doesn't just do it !

Yes to all of that. I meant to look at plastics in Lowe's today and completely forgot until after I drove away. I took some time to look a little closer at that opening and had a couple of ideas. I think I could make a "hook" for lack of a better term, that would go over the bottom lip, right in the same areas that you cut your slots. RV supply will have a similar latch to yours but it will not require a key.

I also thought about using a piano hinge along the top and putting the latch on the bottom.
